Nothing else to add here, discuss if you wish
magius was super cool to explore but it did make the game a walking simulator
i imagine it would have been made better when flight was available though
overall i think islands are better because ships
both are good
Sea is better for 1 and only reason. Its not that laggy
WoM continent map. I know people call it a walking simulator but to me it was more engaging than the AO ocean map. At least I was actually engaging with the game while walking - any time I’m sailing in AO I legit just tab out cause I get bored. So I’m not even technically playing the game, just waiting to get from point A to point B. Can’t even enjoy the views if I wanted to cause 75% of the time it’s either night or fogged up.
The biggest issue I had with the big landmass in WoM was that movement felt super sluggish. But this was ironically fixed AFTER the erasure of the continent in AO with the removal of stamina drain from running and the addition of dashing. These two things would’ve made traveling in WoM feel SO MUCH faster, but alas they came around too late.
That said I really like how brigs and future ships are basically mobile bases that have a degree of customization, they’re definitely the only thing I like about sailing (I guess ship battles are alright too). Man it would’ve been so cool if Magius was the main part of WoM but you could get a ship and explore the remains of the Seven Seas, that way you could still have ships.
and dashing too while we’re at it, something that was only re-added after World of Magic’s rebranding.
Here’s a poll to simplify things
- Arcane Adventures
- Arcane Odyssey
- World of Magic
- I have no preferences because I do not care/care for them equally (lie)
magius
magius
Yeah Sample never actually has their eyes on the game while sailing, maybe if there were random spawing events like Deepwoken they’d actually keep my eyes out for them
Also, the movement tools are a bit of a weird thing since it makes it easy to just traverse large islands in like 10 seconds which has the negative effect of making the world seem a lot smaller than it really is
Magius. It was fire. I cannot explain why, but its atmosphere was a really delicious meal.
I actually liked it being one singular landmass, the problem is that it took forever to get anywhere
Magius was very very pretty.
It was also very very very empty. Like yeah we sail for a long time just to get places but if you painted the surface of magius outside of towns blue nobody could tell the difference.
i think i would have liked continent format a whole lot more if we had better transport like a fast travel “service” (some npc with a cart can take you places for crowns) or we had access to horses or flight, but islands is alright cuz we get epic customizable boats
Continents
What I like:
- Magic council chases can get totally out of hand and you can end up running for your life quite far
- There’s a lot of space for combat
- the world feels more connected
- even if most of it is kinda empty, a large world doesn’t get old nearly as fast as small pockets of content like Islands
- The views are incredible
What I don’t like:
- The walking can feel quite empty at times
- development takes too long (there’s a reason WoM basically never got any content updates or level cap increases)
Islands
What I like:
- You get to have ship fights at sea
- much faster development time
What I don’t like:
- The sailing can feel quite empty at times
- Combat is often very cramped which is awkward with Arcane Odyssey’s movement-based combat system (especially at sea)
- The small islands can get old quite fast (especially considering in the current state of AO most islands don’t have any unique, replayable content)
It’s kinda funny, In WoM I loved ironport because I wanted to go onto the boat and sail out on the open seas
But then in AO I stick to places like Sameria because I like the feel of a huge landmass
I’d prefer a combination of both.
Essentially more bigger islands like magius but less islands overall. This also means we can have a slightly more accurate scale of how big islands are suppose to be.
Bigger islands also decrease the amount of time it takes to sail to places.
I agree. Personally, if I were designing AO, I’d make the island servers in “clusters” of 2-4 islands. Sailing would be a separate server instance, with random encounters and the like depending on the route.
Oh and also, I’d take the time period and set it back maybe 2000 years so we could get the proper Greek mythological feel.
would rather have wom continent under the condition that we get horses to ride around or some kind of mobility for traveling
Add WoM continent sized islands to AO and make rivers big enough for boats to go through so no walking simulator
would be funne
maybe to the dark c or somethin
I feel like overall, woms map gave much more immersion (similar to a game such as botw) than the small islands give us now. Magius was better.
