Fall Damage Poll (Post Full-Release)

It doesn’t really show up often and when it does it’s really buggy and just slows down game-play in my opinion. I think it could be interesting if it only applied during combat so people don’t just jump off of cliffs to run away from things, but otherwise it is just annoying to me.

Only time i’ve ever died to it was nimbus islands

Or any major dmg really

I just wish that you could stop the fall damage or at least reduce it by using a leap spell/move or a dodge reflex, right now it seems like using one of those two after falling a fair bit just makes you take the damage in the air

It has caused legitimately no issue i just dont like it because of how entirely pointless it feels, why add it in the first place if it doesnt change gameplay at all

can we get the ability to perfectly block fall damage rn we can only soften it by like 50% or smth

its super funny until i accidentally mess up in the nimbus lands and then die falling

I was doing a duo progression and my friend fell off the sky islands multiple times, he did like the addition because he didn’t have to climb back up the stepstones

I accidentally fell off the nimbus sky islands and I used an earth leap spell about half way down and it just removed ~97% of my hp but then it disabled fall damage for the rest of the fall somehow
that’s the only issue I’ve found so far

Absolutely agreed. I did a couple expeditions to see how bad the rifts were since there were complaints about those too, and I realized how completely buttcheeks the tall islands are now that fall damage is a thing.

Not only were they already tedious due to climbing, but now I can’t even bring chests down properly without trying to engage with the broken crew command system. Not to mention the crew is just incredibly slow and tedious to use when it comes to getting them to properly follow you so even if it did work properly it wouldn’t even be fun.

It really feels like either no one tested this and gave proper feedback or, for some reason, things aren’t working as intended.

Hot take but kinda immature for a dev to be voting only the best options on a serious poll about his own features

Having your own opinion on your own work is somewhat fine but it’s cringe-worthy when it’s skewing poll results

I guess it’s the norm nowadays that developers have zero rights, can’t even express their own opinions ON OPINION POLL without someone getting pissed off and being vocal about it. Just because you made the feature doesn’t mean you are forbidden from having your own opinion on it.

You’ll rarely see developers disliking the features they made, but that’s because any features they don’t like are usually never made to the game since it gets improved or replaced.

Oh, and if you say “developers aren’t part of the community”. Then are you saying that developers have no right to participate in their own community?
That’s how you get a game where the community voice simply never matters because well, if the developers aren’t part of the community, then they have no incentive to listen to them besides external factors such as engagement metrics, like ratio, and so on.

Skewing poll result? Sure, if the developer voted on something, then others will follow. But here’s the thing. That’s just how being influential in the community works.
If you don’t want this issue: Ban anyone with actual community influence from voting on the poll then, effectively excluding part of the community from voting on the community poll.
A community poll but without the entire community? Hmmmmmm.

Oh, and don’t forget the fact that the guy who made the poll, actually voted on the poll. So it’s funny how you get vocal when Vetex himself voted on the poll, but not the tester who made the poll.

Yes, I know it’s just your opinion, and you’re expressing it vocally. There is nothing wrong with it.
But so is this entire post, which is also my opinion, and I’m being vocal about it.

Oh right, now here’s my opinion on the fall damage itself.

It simply exists. It doesn’t add much to the gameplay besides making it so you have to be slightly careful about falling from high places. Which works, but you have to fall from a REALLY high place before it even matters.
And it certainly doesn’t complement any other features besides blocking/parrying I guess? And even that it just make you press G (or other keys for blocking) when falling.

I don’t think this game would be much different with or without it.
Though I haven’t entered the dark seas beyond the non-insanity range where megastructures can be found, but I heard some people says that it matter a lot more there.

dumb feature, being made dumber because its parry-able

magic jumping while falling feels jank

after you jump you kinda stop moving mid air then take damage

i get why you take damage, so you cant avoid the fall damage tho its kinda annoying

Also Nimbus islands are fucking MENACING

cant even get down no more :sob:

tf am i meant to do with these sealed from Nimbus Wilds bro

Watch out so you don’t choke on it if it goes to deep.

It’s completely fair for a developer to have an opinion of their own work.

However, what’s not fair, is that they rig the votes on a poll about the community’s opinion of a feature in their own favor.

Tell me, if a book author goes to an online store and rates his own books 5/5 stars, does that seem like a fair rating? Or does it seem more like they’re rigging the rating system in their own favor to increase the odds of people buying their books?

Every creator has the right to an opinion on their creation, but when there’s a situation that asks for the opinions of the community affected by that creation, they have no right to put their own opinion.

least hyperbolic forum user be like

Fall damage kinda feels like vetex wanted you to die if you fell off a sky island for lore/immersion reasons, and then worked backwards to make it into a mechanic.

Aside from falling off sky islands I’ve never died to fall damage, but whenever I jump down a mountain that’s slightly too tall and take a bunch of damage I wonder why it’s a mechanic. Movement in this game is very vertical so by neccessity the fall damage threshold is huge, and it’s rather arbitrary which drops are high enough to hurt you.

i forgot it was even a thing until i fell off nimbus lands and prompty got my bones deleted upon making contact with the ocean

I like it, you have to think about how you’re going to get down from really tall places, but it doesn’t become a problem for normal travel. Almost died when falling off a sky island, luckily for me I started at a low point.

i think you can use sky ships to descend safely
