Favorite video game boss?

I made this topic a year ago so I decided to make another one and get some fresh new opinions.
Mine is still the same from last year: Pure vessel from Hollow knight.
Weirdly enough I did not explain my reasoning for why I even liked the boss in the first place so il fix that now lol.

When I fought the weaker version of the fight: The hollow knight I always wondered “Man I wonder how strong this guy would be if he wasn’t infected.” because the hollow knight is infected by orange juice so hes in a weaker state.

However later in the endgame one of the secret bosses you can fight is Pure Vessel which is what the hollow knight was before the infection broke out in Hallownest. And the fight was everything I could have asked for. Theres no gimmicks or luck involved with the fight (cough raidence) just pure skill and I love it. You need quick reaction time to avoid his quick attacks and later in the fight he uses even more moves to catch you off guard.

The fight is quick and really tough. Just a clash between knights. And the music in the fight is so good too it really adds tension in the fight. And thats why he is my favourite video game boss of all time.

Other favourites includes Shido (Persona 5) Badeline chapter 6 (Celeste) Nightmare king Grimm (Hollow knight again lol) and Nameless king (Dark souls 3).

Without any doubt all 3 vergil fights in dmc3.
Extremely challenging, but fun fights. Eventually i’ll get to the difficulties above normal and i’m afraid of these 3 fights already.
Also, great themes.

I like xero too! He caught me off guard sometimes in the pantheon and I like that his fight has a rhyme of jumping and waiting on the platform for his next attack.

His fight isn’t anything crazy but I really like his design and attacks

Forgot to mention my other favorite, Ezkha from the arcane reborn 2022 halloween event.
There’s just too much I like about him to say all of it here, but his attacks, design, drops, and general feel is great. Really hoping than can make more bosses that are as good as him in the main story once mainland is out.

Fecto Elfilis, the final boss of Kirby and the Forgotten Land. It just feels so ethereal, wonderous, and intimidating all at the same time. They really nailed the feeling of fighting against a god-like alien being, from the visuals to the boss’ attacks to the music.

My favorite part of the main fight is the second phase, when it tears a hole in space and starts throwing asteroids at you.

ofc the messiah himself omega zero from the Mega Man Zero series

Less for the fight, in fact the fight itself was pretty underwhelming (at least in the original MMZ3, especially if you equipped Shadow Dash or had already beaten Phantom in Sub Arcadia and gotten the Ultima Chip cause at that point you could just invuln dash through all of his attacks. Omega’s an awesome fight in ZX where he’s a secret boss), the whole cool twist that came with his introduction and the amount of references to moves Zero used in the original X games was pretty rad.

Also Prometheus and Pandora’s fights from both ZX Games were wicked

Usually in Mega Man games, fighting 2 bosses at once is flat out fucking hellish
fuck the X Challenge in the Legacy Collection that shit was difficult but to be fair it is a skill issue because i am very bad
But instead of having 2 bosses you fight at the same time, it’s 2 bosses that tag out and sometimes do combination attacks together, which are pretty difficult to dodge and look straight up awesome in action

My number one favorite will always be Utsuho Reiuji, the lead up to her fight and her music blaring and you look in pure horror as your screen gets filled with seemingly undodgeble bullets , and the satisfaction you get from learning her grueling patterns will NEVER be beaten by any other boss in my opinion, even the top tiers like HK. I could make an essay about her but i’ve already spoken about why she is my favorite boss battle so I will instead talk about my second favorite boss battle, Gabriel from ULTRAKILL

I’ve recently started playing this game called ULTRAKILL, and God damn it is one of the closest a game has come to beating touhou in terms of enjoyment, If you haven’t heard of it or checked it out, please do it is actually peak FPS gameplay. Anything below is going to be pretty large spoilers for Act 1 & 2

So in the first act, you deal with enemies like demosns which quickly become fodder and you assume they have low intelligence, the only enemy so far that you can even really comprehend is v2, who doesn’t speak. Once you reach the climax of Act 1 you expect a fight against another grotesque demon, because your surroundings are well, pretty grotesque. Then you start progressing the stage and Gabriel’s intro starts playing. In the game’s lore Gabriel is an archangel from heaven sent to regulate hell, and if you’ve bothered reading the books ingame, you already know who he is and it invokes a sense of dread, since he is already considered quite strong and this is your first encounter with an “angel” since going to hell. Gabriel threatens you and gives you a chance to basically go back (which obviously you can’t), so you continue. At first he is arrogant and probably will kick the shit out of you on your first few times, but as your learn how to dodge and parry him the fight (like every other ultrakill boss battle) starts to become extremely fun while still being a challenge. After you finally beat him you almost feel a sense of satisfaction after beating the shit out of that arrogant prick, and know that a grim future probably awaits him. This concludes the first act and the outro cutscene, showing Gabriel essentially being exiled from heaven and the threat that you thought you just dealt with suddenly becomes even more terrifying, as you know they will come back, and even angrier this time

Moving onto act 2, between all the crazy shit that happens most players would FORGET about gabriel, however you are promptly reminded in the final chapter, where as soon as you begin the level, Gabriel begins speaking to you. You immedietly notice something different, that his tone isn’t filled with arrogance or proud anymore, but a different undertone: Hatred and exhaustion. As you finish the first level of the chapter and move onto the climax of the chapter, the same sense of dread for your next encounter starts to build up. You reach the intro and the sick ass organ solo by gabriel starts playing has he starts monologuing. You finally reach the last room and there he is again, he begins his final monoogue, I won’t even describe this and just tell you to see it yourself

You can tell that Gabriel is not longer underestimating you and is fighting you with his all to defend what little pride he has left, there is only exhaustion and rage in his tone and the VA does a phenomenal job at the delivery. The fight is similar to his previous one but much faster and much more difficult, your ass WILL get kicked a ton and similarly to the final fight, you start to make progression until you FINALLY beat him. After you beat him instead of reacting with rage, he subverts your expectations and actually seems to be relieved about his loss, and then dissapers. The final cutscene of ACT 2 plays, and you really see how much you deafeating him have changed him, he no longer works for heaven or god, but himself and the final transition from him preparing to kill the last of the council, and accepting his “fate” to the LOUD music as he holds the heads of the council out for the world to see is jaw-dropping, almost to the extent of my first fight with Utsuho in Touhou. Overall it is one of the most badass moments in gaming i’ve ever experienced, and I don’t think there is much that will beat it and I look foward to seeing this boss later on when the game reaches it’s end

I watched it on YouTube. It was absolutely epic! Their weapons clashing midair was epic

That sounds cool! I tried the demo of ultrakill and liked the game but it was too hectic and fasted paced for me. Still found it fun tho!

i like hollow knight

broken vessel from hollow knight, now i will go into details why, so if u plan on playing hollow knight or u do, i will save u the spoilers, also lore stuff

now broken vessel is my fav boss not bc of the difficulty, not bc of the moveset, but bc of the L O R E.

first all, when you see the name broken vessel and how much it looks alike the player, you might realize that you are a vessel, what we see if that a dead body is being brought to life by the infection and forced to fight against you, he even tries to reach to you before he dies again.

when u dreamnail him, you start the lost kin fight, he is a lost kin, a kin, he is family, after a while you reach the void, a place full of dead vessels, and u might realize that broken vessel, is just like you, or was just like you, and when u know that vessels that couldn’t meet what the pale king wanted that their fate was to be thrown and maybe die on impact, and that broken vessel escape, makes it more tragic to fight ur dead brother, or well alive brother.

because vessels had emotions, a will and a mind, stuff that they were made to not have, imo this fight, with knowing the lore, shows how bad the infection is, a dead body that was almost killed, that had emotions and the king knew, is revived and forced to fight against his brother, that how far the radiance is willing to go, its willing to bring dead bugs alive, even bugs as destroyed as the vessels, and to force them to fight their own family and friends, imo broken vessel is the best example of how terrible hollownest was during the infection
