Fear the Wind (September Writing Prompt)

September writing prompt

The Heavy Assassin Ketch sailed through the water, its black sails catching the wind. Its crew was looking out for Navy ships or other people that could pose a threat. Its black hull skimmed the water as it sailed towards Goso Jungle, the last known sighting of the wind bandit.

Eleanor looked out at the island, her blonde hair blowing in a breeze while her red cape seemed unaffected. She looked back down at the contract. Some girl named Lucie had come down from Cirrus and was somehow effortlessly defeating assassins and pirates while also disappearing when ambushed.

“This is confusing. How can someone defeat so many powerful individuals?” Eleanor asked her co-captain.

Michael looked over at her, his hood and bandana covering his face. He had always been calm in dire situations and she had never seen more than his eyes while working together. “She is a wind mage, other than that nothing really stands out. We should be able to end her quickly.”

Eleanor sighed, he was no fun and even if she tried to tease him he always found a way to be neutral. “Though she does have that diving helmet.”

“It won’t be a problem, my daggers can cut titanium.”

So straightforward, Eleanor didn’t like it, she wanted people who had emotions and would cry or beg to live. Why did Architect Merlot make her work with such a boring Assassin?

It didn’t matter, the ketch was arriving, she called for the sails to drop and the ship’s plank was set onto the island. Eleanor and Michael stepped off onto the jungle island. She really hated the humidity and trees but she’d be paid well from this job, now just to find their contact.

It took up to an hour but they finally found two people, both girls, one of them had a brown hood pulled over her head yet there were two strange bulges under it but otherwise she wore simple leather armor, the other girl was Lucie trying to string a fishing pole while being guided, her bright white leather armor her main adornment though next to her sat a diving helm with 5 black gems embedded into it.

“They don’t look that powerful,” Eleanor scoffed.

“What kind’ve gems are those embedded into the diving helmet?” Michael took a logical approach trying to determine what could go wrong or why she had been able to defeat sponsors and assassins before.

Eleanor sighed and pulled out a spyglass for him. Michael looked with his careful eye, “They look like onyx but not nearly as black.”

“I have some onyx embedded into my skin, they increase your fortitude otherwise they shouldn’t be a problem.” Eleanor stated.

“Well, let’s go then,” Michael disappeared into the foliage. Eleanor pouted before following, even though she was a lord, he seemed to be leading the operation.

When they got closer they began to hear snippets of the two girls’ conversation. “Why is it so hard to string a fishing pole!” Lucie shouted, getting upset that the small string wouldn’t go through one of the loops. “We don’t have to do this up in the clouds!”

“Yeah well ever since your fear of water was removed you should try to learn some new skills. You can’t do everything.” The other girl replied, trying to guide her.

“Why can’t I just go underwater and catch the fish with my hands, Keyra?” Eleanor was about to jump when she heard that name which gave her pause, she thought she had seen that somewhere, but where?”

The pause rustled a branch and Keyra crouched down, “Someone is here,” Lucie grabbed her helmet, dropping the fishing rod into the water.

Their cover had been blown, the two assassins attacked from opposite ends of the clearing. Michael unsheathed his daggers and Eleanor summoned a blast of fire to send at the target. The hooded girl grabbed her friend and tossed her into the ocean, her friend barely getting the diving helmet on before plunging under. She took a blast of fire to her side and barely dodged the sagger sailing through the sky.

With a hiss from Keyra, Eleanor remembered where she had seen her. A high level target known to paralyze and drown her victims. Lightning suddenly surrounded her body in an aura, a connection of metal bands under the leather guiding its flow. She launched herself towards Michael, her hands going in for a grab. Eleanor blasted her away with a fire beam which was countered with a lightning beam that she couldn’t have dodged.

Michael finally got one of his poisoned daggers into Keyra but she turned and grabbed him, throwing him into the woods. That moment gave Eleanor time to summon her ultimate art. Keyra looked over only to be greeted with a giant flame blast in the form of a dragon. The earth and the forest burned where the blast made contact destroying everything. She had killed many people with that attack just to listen to their screams.

Then the clouds started to gather in the sky. Michael jumped out of the forest with his katana in hand launching a slash towards the girl standing in the flames. She tossed her cloak to the side and glared. Under her disguise she was a monster, patches of red fur dotting her skin like a plague and two underdeveloped fox ears growing from her head.

“So, you two aren’t pushovers,” she said, blocking the flying slash. Eleanor didn’t hesitate to grab her next magic that she rarely used. A cloud of purple poison filled the clearing, Keyra started to cough but not before sending lightning blasts through the fog. Eleanor set the poison on fire. She heard the scream she so desperately wanted to hear as Keyra’s lungs burnt from poison gas and flames. The clouds that had been gathering stopped.

“Monsters shouldn’t get to live!” Eleanor laughed while Michael picked himself up.

Then the other girl jumped out of the water diving helmet on. “Keyra, nooo!” she cried running over to the barely alive monster. Michael unsheathed his katana and walked over to finish their mission. “I said no!” She cried a red magic circle forming under her feet while she held the creature.

Hot wind filled the clearing, all the fire and poison left was dissipated. When the winds calmed down Michael was gone, only his katana buried in the dirt. Lucie turned her eyes on Eleanor, rage filling them.

“What a succulent expression!” Eleanor laughed, after looking through the helmet’s visor, summoning fire in her hands and on her body. A wind magic circle appeared under her. Eleanor stopped laughing when she was around 2000 feet in the air. Her body came crashing down landing on her ketch, bones shattering on impact and her body turned to a fine paste from the acceleration of the fall. Michael had landed somewhere in the ocean, his body never to be found.

the answer was right fcking here, what incompetent fools

HOW DID THEY NOT REALIZED THEY WERE GOING TO FIGHT GOD :sob:

lots of people have diving helmets.

Michael tended to overcomplicate things and chooses to go for harder answers than the answers that look you right in the face
Eleanor just wants to hear people scream and doesn’t give much attention to what abilities her enemies use.
