But usually we use the word “pictures” or “paintings” or “drawings” when referring to art on a 2D plane

Well, a painting would imply I work with paints or brushes, and a picture is too broad. I use flat design because that’s how I make art in illustrator. I make flat shapes and arrange those lines or shapes into patterns/designs.

It’s not the most correct use of the terminology, but If you’ve ever worked with Adobe illustrator using a mouse, it’s nothing like painting or taking photos.
