Don’t get me wrong, I love the changes that are coming to WoM (I guess now Arcane Oddysey) in the TGR. Islands? Heck yea! Boats? Yes sir! Removing flight spells because they would make boats useless or vice versa?
Wait what.
Man, I didn’t wait for over 5 months, update after update, patiently waiting for the level cap to slowly increase just to not get my flight spells!
Arguments and Counter Arguments
I get that boats are supposed to be the main method of transport after the TGR, but I feel like we’ve already covered that sort of argument back when the forum discussed the Flights vs Horses thing. So taking some points from that, Boats should be a long-form way of transport that would allow players to travel from island to island safely and consistently. Flight - at least in the early game - would not allow island-to-island travel and would instead be focused on moving around a single island as quickly as possible. After all unlike boats, flight spells allow players to travel horizontally AND vertically, which could be useful in islands of terrain with varying heights.
If a player tries to travel from island-to-island using flight spells, they will more than likely end up in the ocean. That’s another reason why Hazards such as whirlpools and sharks will exist, to prevent/discourage players from just fly spamming island-to-island.
Also, I think it’s a shame to just leave out a spell that a lot of people were looking forward to using, especially since it’s already in the game.
As a way to keep boats as the main method of transportation, perhaps flight spells could be found as lost spells instead?
or you know just don’t remove flight spells at all
I agree, no reason to just remove something that is already in the game. I don’t even care if they are redundant, they are right there, it would litteraly be more work to take them out than to not. I mean, you can fly, how cool would that be!

basically it negates ANY danger the ocean would have. this would also affect on land too basically making scaling any height easy as fuck. whats danger on an island when you can just fly away
To be fair, at higher levels, the flight spell becoming more powerful would be matched by ocean enemies becoming more powerful, more space in between islands, and terrain becoming more difficult to traverse. It’s also an option to have certain weaknesses, like hitting terrain interfering with the spell, or having certain islands disable movements spells altogether.

Don’t get me wrong, the flight spell is definitely going to let you bypass some potentially big things over the ocean.
But if it’s a lost spell, then that means that the player has earned the right to do that.
And when I say islands disabling movement spells, I mean big, mystical islands, that exist to server as a challenge to the player. Think BoTW shrines. (Yes, it doesn’t disable your movement in BoTW, but it’s an example.)
I just mean to say that there are implementations of the spell’s concept that don’t interfere with how gameplay is right now (or will be in the future).
But I literally just said that it would be earned, not leveled towards. It would be factored in to certain challenges, like bosses or parkour or mobility.
Could just prevent flight spells from being activated while swimming, so that the sea is more dangerous if your boat breaks down or you fall in or such, and have flight energy drain ramp up as the flight goes on so that it’s still good for mobility, but is less useful then boats for long distance since you’d fall into the ocean and not be able to fly anymore

it just doesn’t sound as fun since it completely bypasses ship v ship combat. people just gonna be flying from place to place and skipping a large portion of the games content lmao
I don’t think it would be easy to just fly away and escape from other players though. We already know from early WoM footage that flight spells take like 5 seconds to charge up before you can actually fly. During those 5 seconds players will basically be a sitting duck. If by 5 seconds you haven’t damaged the other player while they’re charging the flight spell then they deserve to get away imo.
Alternatively, maybe getting damaged while charging flight would cancel the spell before it is able to be charged, so it’s not as easy for players to run away. But that’s a suggestion for another day (if flight is reintroduced).
i think the fly away anytime problem can be fixed with a long cast time that can be interrupted by taking damage.
The making ships useless problem could be fixed with making flight spells cost a lot more magic energy when over seas? i mean in AA the game knew when you were in “sea biome” and also maybe it would make sense cuz the magic charged sea water bullshit lore thing.
we dont know 100% yet but i would love to see big areal based pvp at higher levels, also airships would be cool. imagine big ass airship battles with people who dont have the flight spell in the airship shooting with all types of weapons and cannons, while flying high level players outside manouvering around the airships and fighting each other
