Fools and Feuds - [ prologue ]

every protagonist needs a tragic backstory
i probably will not get more than two chapters in

A piercing screech tore through the air, a sound so heartrending it could only have been made by someone who was in horrible agony. I stopped, feeling all the oxygen being sucked out of my lungs as I turned to look.

“Lily!” I screamed, though my own voice sounded tinny to my ears. There she was, my sister, my little baby sister, on the ground with glistening eyes, the filthy boot of a cell guard pinning her to the blood-soaked tiles.

And a spear in her back.

“Run,” she choked out. Her fingernails, bloody and broken, grasped weakly at the stones beneath her. “Leave me, Kat! Run!”

More guards were rushing in by the second, chasing down the fleeing prisoners. Bodies of both sides littered the shore, tinging the damp sand a violent crimson. Somewhere, something was on fire. Smoke filled the starless night sky, interrupted by brilliant bursts of magic and the clamor of clashing blades.

So I ran.
