Hey All,
The forum was down for a few days, and I wanted to shed some light on why. When I created this forum, it was the first time I ever created something with discourse which is the name of the open source repo that this is built on. The server itself is an old server that is grandfathered in on the plan I am using, so to increase storage capacity, I can only add volumes extra storage attached to the server.
The problem over the course of the years is that everytime I wanted to run updates on the forum I would have to go through a painful process of getting more storage for the container/image. Often times requiring me to delete docker program itself and reinstall it.
I am not here to go technical on you, there was a lot of learnings over the years when it came to this site and now most of everything is inside its own volume. Backups, uploads, the database, and now officially the discourse containers and images are all on their own volumes meaning I can expand the storage whenever need be.
What this means in the future is that we can easily update the forums to the latest version instead of waiting about a year in between to update. It basically just means more features as discourse develops them and UI changes. Obviously you can probably already tell there are some UI changes that come from the discourse base image itself.
Either way, the forum dying randomly put me in a position that I had to move stuff onto a volume, and in the end, it was for the betterment and future of the forum. Sorry about the downtime as I have been extremely busy in my life with work and my partner. So I don’t have as much time to manage these things.
