As I stumble away from the ruins, I collapse onto the ground with heavy breaths as I fight off this monster.
I’m gonna need a Check-Up.

You’re special. You’ve BEEN special.
You were born into a simple family near the ports of Palo Town. Your family wasn’t particularly wealthy when you were born, but they weren’t poor either. Your father was a sailor with your mother part of the fallen nobility of Ravenna, but you never really understood what your mother saw in him.
Your mother had red hair and was quite beautiful, while your father had black hair and looked like the average sailor. You swear to this day that she could have done better, yet you understand why she had fallen in love with your father.
He was almost always at sea and was a renowned warrior. On the days he did come home, he would always bring home a souvenir from his travels across the War Seas. He was kind and caring, according to the villagers that is.
He left you and your mother behind when you were 3, your mother says he went on a voyage to the Dark Seas but never came back. You do not have the hair color of your father nor the hair color of your mother, but rather it’s blond like that of your grandfathers. You also seemed to resemble the mailman, but you never really gave it any thought. Your neighbors always said that your father never really believed your mother.
You are a mage. You’re special, not because you are a mage, but because no one awakened as a mage at the age of 5, in a family with no history of magic, and with magic never seen before.
You awakened your powers when you broke your hand. You remember the pain, how you were so terrified that you might be unable to use it again. You cried and closed your eyes. You wanted the pain to stop, for your hand to return to how it was.
Then it healed. In an instant it healed. With that, the pain dissipated, almost like a fleeting nightmare. It was like you had never broken it in the first place.
You showed your ability to your mother and she was astonished. Mostly because she hadn’t seen a magic circle before, let alone a mage.
It’s been many years since then. You went into the medical field, you must have been destined to become a doctor, with your life magic and all.
“Sigh.”
And that leads you to this. You’re now doing paperwork on a ship sailing out of the Dark Seas.
You joined this crew a few years ago because of the captain. He said he needed men like you since he was sailing into the Dark Seas. His crewmates, however, didn’t. Almost no one was injured throughout your 3-month-long trip, and the few times people were injured, it was always a minor wound. During those days, you felt like you weren’t helpful. Most of the injuries could have been fixed up by a weak vial of healing anyway. Yet, the captain asked for you to stay as the crew’s doctor and said he saw that potential in you.
Those were the days. While paperwork is excruciating, it feels good to have something to do while you’re sailing. Your abilities have grown with your confidence in yourself since then. Now you sometimes help in combat when the crew needs a medic.
You can’t help but smile recalling those-
SLAM!
A man shuffles into the office, likely of the newer hires, probably the new deckhand the crew has been talking about.
Clutching his bloody arm, he asks,
“Hey doc, can I get a checkup?”
TLDR: Checkup please
so true
