  • be true to yourself but be morally wrong

Why is this poll so evenly split? I’d assume people would be in agreement that the right thing to do is the right thing to do.

@MrYes, @Raimon, @anon17706760, and @switchbladeadrenalin; can you guys please explain your logic to me?

The morally correct option isn’t always the optimal option.

I think I developed this because in South Korea’s education system, mainly its properties like the relative ranking system. In South Korean schools, it is beneficial to yourself to throw others under the bus. When grades are that determinant of your success, the moral option isn’t always correct. Sure. You could get yourself a 0 in every subject to help others since the education system is ranked (at the cost of your own future success), or you could take the optimal path and undermine your competitors to gain an edge over them. Every single person you surpass is a higher chance for you to succeed.

The moral path was never optimal. That was how I was educated, and that undermining behavior was what lead me to success. This is how everyone was taught, and this mindset won’t change until Korean education systems are revamped.

Children are sorted based on performance relative to their peers, making every other student a threat to yourself and someone you have to overcome and compete against.

I would rather be true to myself than lie and say what people want me to

It’s all about authenticity for me, as well as individual freedoms.

Putting on a metaphorical “mask” for others may feel suffocating for some, and some others deeply dishonest.
Now, I’m not saying that from my answer that being morally wrong is a good thing (crime like murder for example, is obviously inexcusable) , but I do believe that forcing yourself to conform to someone else’s moral standard can be just as morally wrong.

Morality isn’t universal. Different people have different convictions, thus everyone pretending to agree just to fit in feels like a betrayal of self.

I don’t want to drag religion into this, but certainly I believe religion plays a valuable role in shaping morality. Ephesians 4:25 says “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.”, and Proverbs 12:19 says “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.”

Humans can improve too, you know, but sometimes truthfulness is what is needed for this to happen.

Feel free to shoot me a DM if you want to debate/talk about this further, I’m more than happy to.
