It is stored in the crates that shipwrights sell. The reason they need to be moved from island to island is because a player will use something in their inventory that is in one of those crates, so it needs to be relocated to a nearby shipwright.

Whenever you store something, it gets put into a mystical chest and scattered around the world until you need it, that’s why there are boxes full of money and keepsakes everywhere.

My assumption has always been it was stowed in the cargo we store beneath our ship and some of it in the captain’s quarters

We litteraly have piles of gold and jewels stored in our captain’s quarters. It is pretty much logical for the rest of it to appear as cargo like others said.

Basically, thats where brig user stores their items. They shove every item they have into the fish tank’s sand/dirt/floor/ground/whatever that make up the base of the fish tank using magic energy.
The mass of every item adds up and creates a field of gravity so intense that time in the fish tank was dilated and caused the fish to become stasis and unaging. All this was protected by the magical glass wall of course.
Don’t ask me about those who don’t have a brig.
