Got into an argument in-game against an RKer and here I am complaining about it

Do you believe that a player’s skill in PvP determines how good they are at the game?
  • Yes, AO is all about battling other players
  • No, PvP is optional and you’re no skill issue when some crackhead murders you in 3 seconds as soon as you alt+tab to glance at Discord
  • Yes to a degree, as combat, whether against players or NPCs, is a fundamental of the game and it’s impossible to enjoy the game without some experience in fighting.

If unorganized PvP was removed from the game entirely (I.e. players can’t just randomly kill each other on sight; duels in Munera, assassinations, or bounty hunting would still be allowed), would your experience improve?
  • Yes, I’m tired of minding my own business and still getting targeted by the most random-ass person which inevitably leads to me losing Galleons unfairly.
  • No, I don’t get targeted at all
  • No, unorganized PvP brings the game some variety and unpredictability; it makes the game less bland

What do you spend most of your time doing in the game?
  • PvP fights (bounty hunting, RK’ing, ganking, assassinations, clan wars, etc.)
  • NPC fights (boss farming, naval battles against the GN or Pirates, etc.)
  • Non-hostile player interactions (trading, boss farming assistance, etc.)
  • Non-hostile NPC interactions (quests, cargo shipments, fishing, etc.)
  • The storyline (because it’s actually kind of captivating)

As the game has been out for nearly a month now, and with more and more players finishing the current chapter of the storyline (& reaching max level), do you believe that the level threshold for PvP is too low?
  • No, I believe that after Level 50 players should have a good-enough grasp of the game to start attacking other players/defending themselves from other players
  • Yes, Level 50 players do not stand much of a chance against steadily increasing numbers of max level players.

Is it a player’s fault for unwittingly choosing poor stat build that is outclassed by the current meta?
  • No, there should be more rebalances and/or sources of info to direct newer players to builds that currently don’t suck
  • No, all stat builds are sufficiently balanced and there’s not much of an “overpowered” build in the game currently.
  • Yes, newer players should have done more research to learn about the meta before committing to a build. Otherwise, just make a new file and pursue a strong build from square one.

I want to say this outright that I’m not trying to target or shame any kind of player with these polls; I want your opinions on the role PvP plays in the game. I’ll participate in the polls too, and you can call me “skill issue” or “noob” as much as you want.

If you’re curious about the backstory to this, here it is

Oh, the Missouri

Personally, I’m in the game as a collector: I like farming for boss drops and trading with other players. I’m no PvP sweat, and I don’t want to be caught up in the competitiveness of that corner of the playerbase. I play to have fun, not beat other players’ asses in a boxing ring to make me feel good about myself.

After dying to an assassination (in which some John Doe put several 200+ damage Poison spells into my back when I was trying cook a fking meal), the guy proceeded to call me ‘terrible’ and ‘you have all these boss drops and you’re still bad,’ to name just a few. I said I just wanted to mind my own business, but things escalated from there. The purpose of this isn’t to shake some salt, so I’ll just say the rest is self-explanatory.

i’m more interested in the story than pvp, and if i do pvp i don’t want to start the fight with a -200 health disadvantage from being attacked by some rando while i was in my inventory

I like the unorganized pvp of the game, since it allows for way more chaos and random situation.
Yeah, grinding is cool and all, but it gets more and more mundane over time as you keep doing it. While you may lose all your cargo, and probably a bunch of galleons, when you get attacked by another player, you can very quickly make it back anyways. It helps to spice things up.
Plus, we barely lose anything from dying anyways, the consequences are just inconveniences.

Also, disabling PVP outside of bounties (as suggested in the poll) kind of sucks since people can just hop on your ship and steal your sealed chests while you’re turning them in, and you wont be able to fight back.

At its core, this is an MMORPG, and once you hit the endgame (done pretty much everything, gotten the perfect build, grinded to your hearts desire), all that really remains to do is PVP.

i’d never let that slide :skull:
Why are you farming boss drops if you aren’t interested in pvping at some point? to fight npcs? It just doesn’t make sense to me.

The only time I’ve ever been targeted was by some good rep who “wanted a 1v1” but decided not to ask before doing it. Honestly, I’d probably do Munera Island 1v1s if I really felt like it, but I’ve never been much of a PvPer.

also @archrono depends on build, but some boss drops are a pretty good enhancement to general DPS, which includes killing bounties faster. however I think the main driver to getting boss drops is still PvP

or vanity, i have the scimitars off Elius and they look kinda sick on my back. lord knows I’d never use one

personally, i enjoy pvp to some degree but when im fishing or just doing something else i would rather be left alone

the fact that a level 125 can just go ahead and kill a level 50 seems kinda weird to me aswell

if you really dont feel like fighting, then just run and then log lol, ive personally done that a couple times against someone who was using a metal size build (Fuck you metamancers)

honestly the last question is gonna solve itself with the first update come brewing and combat balancing

i thought only people in a party could mess with your sealed chests tho

who’s the rker i will hunt them i’m bored

(I.e. players can’t just randomly kill each other on sight; duels in Munera, assassinations, or bounty hunting would still be allowed)

Bounty hunting/assassinating is imo basically the same as RKing (except without same rep pvp) since you can’t see if someone is bounty hunting you so the person being attacked in both cases will still be unprepared, also being killed from bounty hunting or assassinating reduces your fame by like 10% which can be a lot of grinding depending on how much you have

i think PVP makes the game more fun, but it’s quite unbalanced right now. hopefully that’ll be fixed in the next updates, as the game is still early in its development.

imo, RKing isn’t inherently an issue unless people insult others during it or do it to the point of rendering the game unplayable for others, like by spawn-killing newbies and such, though maybe i’m biased since i find it fun to fight over sealed chests and battle with random people most of the time.

I think pvp, as the game currently is: Unbalanced, laggy as hell, ect.
brings the game down ALOT.

i mean ideally there shouldnt be poor stat builds in general, so info on the builds that don’t suck would be agreeing and keeping the concept that some are considerably stronger than others… and yeah thats the case right now, but its not like if it was the goal. nothing balancing cant fix.

but, if you got something like 115 magic 102 strength 33 vitality, yeah ill judge you. its fairly obvious when you look at the requirements for your skills that you only unlock new stuff every 10 stat points spent or so. no reason to spend in sets of 5 or less.

granted, not everyone knows the max level, and its definitely possible to accidentally spend points in stats you didnt want since theres no confirmation

There is next to no difference between unorganized pvp and bounty hunting lol

The reason why I’m making the build is because I have a few friends like Derp and Specter who enjoy pvp from time to time. I want to match their power level so I am able to fight them at their best.

Personally, I think Pvp is in a weird place. On one hand, you can potentially have people mauling level 50s and such which is not really great.

But, this is also the game where whirlpools exist, and puny rowboats/sailboats can just get sunk by a new players driving into walls, which leads to death, so uh, dying randomly just happens in this game a lot. In my experience. It is frustrating, but so is getting mauled by a shark, or getting spooked by some random criminal I dont expect(Yes, I am that bad at this game).

I haven’t played the game enough I’d say though, as the game is still fairly new, as you already mentioned, so I may not fully understand the current situation of the game.

who is driving directly into a wall

also whirlpools rarely happen, even if they do you can just go around them

mfw you need to be killed/your ship has to be sunken to get the chests normally.

imo you should get a notification when someone starts hunting you, and only that, not the name or anything, just that you should be careful.

then people will just leave when they’re being hunted
only reasonable change i see that would implement this is talking to the bounty npc and they’ll tell you if someone is hunting you or something
