Grand navy corruption and tower factions

short rant I wanted to post here:

today I was looking at lysara’s character profile in the notebook and read that the navy had investigated her and found that her and her group had ties to the assassin syndicate and were assassinating people

however, since I had the idea of the navy being corrupt at that moment, I thought that maybe, the navy was simply using that as an excuse to get rid of the swiftstriders because no one could really prove otherwise

the same goes for the veridian hunters, they had recently been labeled criminals due to their cruel and usual ways of taking out targets (should also mention they’re bounty hunters, like the swiftstriders)

now, while I could be reading too deep into it, nothing in that text insinuates that their hunting methods had changed recently, meaning the navy might have let them exist and kept that as an excuse to prosecute them later

but why? because the navy doesn’t want to lose its job!

the navy’s entire deal is that kingdoms let it set up shop in their seas, and they keep piracy and general crime low, and that sounds like a pretty good deal considering how proud the astoria kingdom was of spreading its influence

now, if several independent bounty hunting groups begin picking up traction, doing the same this as you are but arguably more effectively, (since I doubt veyne or lysara bothered with the whole arresting and prosecution bit) then they very much could run the navy out of business, meaning their precious influence all over the war seas is GONE

so what do they do? mark them as criminals! say you ran investigations, the public wont know any better! with that, they have no choice but to disband or die at the hands of the navy

and THAT’S why I think veyne and lysara might genuinely be innocent, honest bounty hunters

what do you guys think? am i onto something or genuinely losing it?

Big V would never think of that

Well, Lysara - maybe, but actively promoting the usage of poison in your hunts isn’t really innocent.

Why does Veyne get unique green poison on his axe tho? Why can’t we have green poison magic?

The real reason is that betec needed to fill out the regular pirate-bounty hunter-third party form for Nimbus sea tower factions and needed a reason to give bounties on Veyne and Lysara so they could be tracked

It’s not that deep.

They could also just be going far beyond their own reach / limits and being more “vigilante” like and going further away from the navy’s law

oh absolutely not, i’m mostly going to be using this for my own version AO’s story

I assume that that veyne has poison coated on his axe, like a grease?

I was talking with yonder about this and he suggested the idea of the navy intentionally sabotaging the veridian hunters by interrupting their supply lines, propaganda, etc

i mean yeah but that answer is lame

why would they be overstepping their boundaries if they knew it meant getting flagged by the navy anyways

The gravy definitely do have some kind of corruption or something along those lines going on amongst the high ranks of the organization, Edward Kenton has already hinted towards that when he and his forces were ordered to open fire on an innocent town

Not to mention Commodore Kai’s “secret“ that we don’t know anything about yet

mhm! sadly i dont think we’ll get anything relating to that until the chimera sea

I would kill to see some more depth being added to the minibosses, at least with some dialogue like the exiled and minotaur, if they had idle animations and didn’t just stand there in their office/corner it’d be nice

Even chart pirate factions’ leaders got more lore to themselves! They have unique dialogue on spawn, unlike the tower minibosses, whose logbook entries mostly contain info on the faction itself.

Did you know the Storm Pirates leader originates from Stormgale? And the Frenzied Pirates leader is mute?

even the sea minibosses (like evander, crone, etc. etc) have dialogue, not even the tower minibosses do and they’re literally alone so it’d be even more dramatic

If only AS and Gravy bosses actually walked around their bases at daytime, doing minor activities or chatting with higher ranking soldiers….sometimes even talking to you if they notice. :face_holding_back_tears:

I think vetex will have to be careful on how to implement the grand navy, aswell as other joinable factions into the story

necroposting :face_holding_back_tears:

while this is a really interesting theory, id even argue far more interesting than their current lore, i dont think its too plausible

veyne seems really inhumane, his weapon and such really speak of a careless “lawbringer” who only does what he does for the money, and perhaps just being sadistic without consequences overall (i mean the axe literally has poison particles spilling everywhere when using its skills, poor little evil timmy isnt going to react to that well and i dont think the navy would be too happy having to handle report so many infected corroded criminal corpses, and would prob even give them a bad image doing so)

veyne and his veridian hunters do seem like some sort of failed proxy knight-like group, as in a way they were way more careless and less honorable than them (despite i seeing them as dishonorable depending on the case and finding them way too extreme)

as for the swiftstriders, it does make sense for them to (im assuming) stop bounty hunting and start taking contracts for the assassins, esp during the recent events in the nimbus sea, where its likely many important figures will travel around the seas, and given the assassins want the war to go on, its prob they were very well funded to block routes and such and kill diplomats and envoys travelling trough kingdoms as well as heroes trying to stop the war, such as our character
they also seem like very greedy bastards (as in making earning drachma a priority, even looking at the way they dress, esp compared to other tower enemies makes them seem really focused on wealth rather than honor)

while the veridian hunters are hunted (making sense for them to attack the player on sight, being out of fear or just trying to rob you or something) id argue that if they were truely innocent they wouldnt be building outposts using their wealth from the bounty hunting days, as it would make no sense for them to just spawn money out of nowhere in my opinion, especially with the criminal reputation
as for the swiftstriders it makes sense to build outposts, i mean, theyre wealthy and funded by the assassins (plus my theory of them to be hired to take a lookout on the war and such) so it does make total sense

another thing i would like to point out is that both factions have a tendency to hide their face, something im assuming they did before going on their criminal path, and if so i think it kind of points out they werent the greatest people

while i think a faction framed by the navy is a really interesting concept i dont really think either of them fit, and if anything like that were implemented, they would prob have to be like a side quest or something, idk

Have you ever heard of lynch mobs?
