Hot take: Captain Maria is the most fun boss

Captain Maria was the first boss to really make me engage with the dodging and parrying mechanics of the game and felt really satisfying as a boss to overcome

Her fight solved some of my gripes with the other bosses with non breakable terrain and no(t too many) bullshit moves. Her tentacles are easily dodged with iframes on good timing and it’s really satisfying to dodge them all consecutively.

her moves are pretty telegraphed and you know to parry after her two dash sequence and you can even predict most of the gunshots which seemed unfair to me at the start. Her moves also left downtime so I could actually fight back and not just compete for damage unlike Allanon and ivar.

This is basically just me appreciating Maria for not being a mess of giant dot and aoe moves with no visual clarity or damage openings like allanon and ivar

She’s definitely not the spectacle that King Calvus or the following bosses were but she doesn’t need to be, she’s the opening boss of the nimbus sea and proves the strength of the pirates of the marauding sea

Overall felt pretty fun for someone that plays harder games where you can master bosses with skill

The thing about Maria is that she’s not hard, like at all, and that’s a problem

The outrageous amount of invincibility just requires you to kinda sit there

It’s not hard, it’s not complex, it’s just tedious.

Just spirit rain, wait, spirit rain, wait, spirit rain, and the fight is over

giving a boss invincibility for a regular attack just feels unfun to play
at least with ceasar’s big attack he can still be damaged, and it makes sense to give him a bunch of damage reduction during it because it tells the player that attacking isn’t worth it right now and that they have to run away. Invincibility just tells the player to wait something out, which is a lot less engaging, and her tentacle attack just lasts soo long so you’re just sitting there for a solid 10 seconds just waiting for her to finally finish up the attack to continue the fight and it’s just so boring

Makes sense, I just like clear sequences to my boss fights instead of the constant attacks spam of some bosses. I think my perfect boss would be a mix of Maria and Ivar with her downtime and counterplay but the intensity of Ivars attacks (excluding the giant big pp energy waves)

For me maria has always been just a waiting game type thing. Like the amount of I frames she has in unreasonable and she has some moves that feel like they do more damage then they should. For me the most fun boss is probably argos in the story because it just feels like your actually fighting someone to the death as you can see he gets weaker, and outside of the story is probably halbjorn because I’m not sure if its a glitch but he literally disappears randomly which adds a bit of I guess fear factor.

This post would have been rage bait before the update, Dodging probably must have improved her fight exponentially but before the update she had the most garbage design compared to every other boss.

at least with the new update, i can eviscerate her in fucking 10 seconds with assassination

yeah i really liked her fight too and didn’t understand why was the ao playerbase shitting on her

she’s alright but overall I think elius is the best fight, even if the difficulty spike can be hard for new players.

She was mainly unfun due to two things and one of them was fixed

  1. The iframes
  2. Her plunderers m1s, this was a problem because of how npcs had perfect aim before so there was just nothing you could do about it, too fast to parry or dodge

i-frames make the fight tedious. Though, now that we’ve had to deal with whatever Jarl Ivar is, I guess her fight isn’t all that bad after all
