I personally think Arcane Odyssey is pretty creative, it’s sophisticated but that’s not a bad thing.
But I wonder what y’all think when comparing this to power systems from JJK, Naruto, One Piece, etc. Can it still live up to its name?

It’s just your generic magic system from one of the billions of shonen series
4/10
Basic elemental magic schtick
Minds are gone
Curses are just One Piece.
You need to make a symbol to cast magic properly, which is pretty fun, but then the circles just appear with no effort, making them nothing more than those red indicators that appear when a boss in a Mario game is about to dash into you.
went from pretty unique to pretty mid
generic elemental magic system
only defining feature are curses and that’s basically devil fruits from one piece
I do think the Spirit Weapons are pretty interesting, but yeah, pretty generic.
Except for Ash, nobody ever does Ash.
Most curses are just logia’s minus the water weakness
The spirit system is pretty fun, although soul magic is basically just the second most popular choice behind elemental.
spirit weapons are just generic magic weapons that can do a generic magic things rn
maybe i’d change my mind once it gets more developed
in 5 - 10 years…
arcane universe power system fell off when minds were removed
I could care less about the minds honestly, they don’t really do anything for me. I do like the current version of how things work. The concept of each magic learned being more difficult than the last is pretty cool to me. Makes the 3 magic limit make sense while leaving the possibility for a cool character with like 4 or possibly even more magics possible. I like how some magics synergize with or nullify each other’s effects I think that’s kinda neat. Spirit weapons conceptually are neat to me too. I like how they work on a different energy than magic does, and the weapons being a bit more like what you would think of when you imagine a wizard is neat. I do hope we get some more odd spirit weapons in the future, like a spoon, a cup, a strength spirit weapon that’s just a giant handheld fan, a yoyo, just kinda silly stuff along with the more cool stuff like staffs, crowns, necklaces, etc. I do hope there’s a bit more done to differentiate between spirit energy and magic energy in what users of one can do what the other can’t and vice versa.
Compared to more complicated power systems? I definitely wouldn’t call it as complicated as JJK. It seems to be a bit more complicated than One Piece, and I know jackshit about Naruto so can’t say much on that. I wouldn’t say complication automatically means creativity, but I wouldn’t disagree that complication can go hand in hand with creativity at times.
Anyways I’d say the power system in AO is creative enough, it’s not like groundbreaking, but I think it does enough to differentiate how it works from other things. Especially down to the explanation of how it works which I find a lot of things with similar elemental power systems just don’t really do.
Contrary to what some say, I don’t feel it was ever all that creative. That said, it definitely used to be better than what it is today.
Now it feels like the magic system you’d see in a gatcha. I could literally see lost magics being on a spinner in another game. It’s made marginally deeper due to Sea Curses, Arcanium, and a few other niche details—but those aren’t enough to take it out of 5/10 territory.
It’s literally just fairytale spliced with one piece with a few minor changes
man I must be boring, no wonder my name is jared
Listen man if you like something and think it’s cool and creative you don’t need to jump on the bandwagon with everyone else who thinks it’s boring.
Not to say it isn’t good to get their thoughts and consider them, but at the end of the day if you think it’s creative and unique even if everyone else doesn’t then keep thinking like that, you’ll probably be happier that way anyways.
It could use more Naruto creativeness. Each attack should have a unique animation with unique magic circles so everything isn’t generic and easy to know what your opponent uses
True enough
If vetex actually cared about suggestions, the game would be much more unique
Lorewise I feel like there’s a good deal of potential for the power system to be creative considering it’s literal magic, but it being a game first and foremost until the books get written REALLY limits it. Doesn’t help that it’s not even close to being finished, so any of the creative planned stuff is minimum 7 months out…
my 2 biggest issues with it are a) how many magics there are and b) magic being objectively stronger than other types of fighting
i dislike how many magics there are cause it means that you can basically always expect what a certain magic user is going to do. like an earth mage will always use earth magic, regardless of their environment. middle of the desert with no rocks in sight? rock. you cant have interesting combinations like an earth/fire mage using earth magic to make sand and using the fire to create glass. itll always just be fire and earth separately
and i dislike that nobody can challenge this system either, because (IIRC) vetex stated that magic users are just inherently stronger than everyone else. there will likely never be someone who’s not a mage but still a massive threat because of their own combat prowess. like imagine someone who basically invented their own method of fighting and is a threat because of that, instead of just “oh they used magic to enhance their physical state”
i mean the AU as an entirety used to be pretty distinguished, but recent changes have left it sum like:
(Former) 7/10 → (Current) 5/10
