How do I run a clan?

I’ve been putting off asking for a while and even considered just deleting my one man clan before next update but I want to actually do something with that clan, so here goes.

Right now, I’ve got my little itty bitty one man clan with two thousand or so infamy that I was just using as a bank, but with the new clan building update on the horizon and a friend who kind of plays AO, I want to actually see if I can give my clan some traction and actually do things with my clan. My vision for the clan is exploring and making money, especially making money, I want to become rich and I want to do it alongside others and hopefully make them rich as well, but I need members first and foremost.
The chief problem at hand is that I’m not very social at all, so the first big question is how do I recruit members? What can I do to entice players to join? And once I have a decent population of players, how can I get those members to recruit more and stay in my clan?
Another question I’ve been having is should I make a discord server for it? I know that more likely than not someone I recruit won’t have discord and likely can’t get discord but what about those who do? And then comes the question of how I moderate that server and keep it stable if I do make a server?
And the final question (which can probably be answered above) is how do I manage a clan? What do I have to do, what’s the baseline code of conduct I should follow for a clan like this? I REALLY don’t want toxic people in my clan so how do I pick out the weeds? And how harsh should I be on people who break our rules?

All of these questions just goes to show how bad I am at managing and really it’s expected but I really hope I can actually make something out of this clan and it starts by asking these questions. I’m sure there are a lot of questions I need to ask myself as well, but I won’t try to get into that right now.

i had this exact problem when i started neptune, and really you’ve got like two options, either you go out your comfort zone or you have a friend who’s more social to do it for you

don’t strive for high member counts but instead high activity, it’s not even worth exceeding 30 members atp because not all of them will play as much as you want them to

yes 100%, i’m planning on making a yt video with linked tutorials on how to make a discord server for your clan

don’t recruit people who would break your rules and you won’t need moderators, at the end of the day your clan server is meant to be a group of people who get along, no?

be active in your own clan and have common sense and it’ll all come naturally

lets start with the clan in general
you need to put effort into it, make sure people know what your clan is for and why
the logo is important and so is the description

1, formulate a message using the ‘formal’ messaging type
2, save it somewhere or just remember it
3, you join a server
4, you see a person that aint in a clan that can be invited to a clan → you send them a message using the formal method and said message, dont forget to add a title and end with ‘kind regards, [your username/file name].’

make your clan appealing, like i said, get a good logo, make a good ‘invitation letter/message’

just tell them something along the lines of ‘hey go recruit more members for me’, to incentivise them to actually do it, promise rewards if they got proof

its easier to manage your clan that way yes, but if youre really just looking for members and dont care if they’re 7 year old braindead kids or not, then dont

its a great filter so small, stupid kids dont make their way into your clan and spend all your clan treasury on something stupid like 100 light canons or something

if youve got a discord server, invite them
if not, then dont, or get their discord and ask them for help with i.e. starting a server

you obviously cant do that on your own, no, get a (close) friend or sibling who wont do it for you, but with you.

make it friendly, get some rules
you can copy over some rules from another discord server, which will probably be easier

you kinda cant… you cant see immediately wether someone’s unfriendly or not, no, you just invite people to your server and set up A, a ticket center for people to report toxics, and B, set up chat logs so deleted messages will still get shown

different rules broken yield different punishments, i suggest using a point system where a certain rule adds more points than others, and if the point total of a player exceeds a certain amount, they could get a warn, a mute, a kick or a (perma) ban

of couse, this has to be flexible so that people cant abuse a single rule and stay just under the point threshold to avoid punishments
if you notice or get informed by others about someone exploiting this, you can set aside the rules and make an exception

give them harsher punishments/more points depending on their history with rule-breaking

Along with the above, you should also run your clan like it’s the Phantom Troupe. Aka do whatever you want and find people who are interested.

1 really good member is better than 10 inactive members so focus on quality over quantity too.

  1. make your clan tax rate 99% of all galleons earned from members
  2. berate and demean your members periodically to motivate them
  3. kick people out for the slightest disobedience, but keep an inner circle of high ranking members (your friends) that make all the rules. make examples out of the rule breakers.
  4. make your members fear you
  5. keep the discord chat toxic and spiteful, turn the members against eachother, a little hate is ok, but make sure they remember who the boss is.

these are a few tips to get started. theres obviously more to it but this is the basics
