if i had to guess its a poor sanity check on a remote that allows you to spoof as other players to accept trades as them. at the same time if it were that simple it probably wouldve been patched already so idk
actually i remember some other detail that might be relevant - the ppl using custom magics renamed themselves to that magic somehow in order to use it. if they attack ur ship it shows a notification like āur ship was attacked by CataclysmMagicā or something. could be related could not be
