Eh, I see it as an opportunity to look further than just a human when creating OCs. There is a lot more variety and diversity in furry OCs than others imo (although I guess alien or fantasy is another opportunity for that). I guess that does have some downsides though (as you said, cringy OCs)
Although, quite often it isn’t promoting that they are one, but that they like them and create those kinds of OCs. Just a small thing I’d like to point out. In a sense, the believing part is another type of furry or adjacent.
