How powerful is The Player REALLY?

The Player, who was nothing but fodder when arriving in Redwake; could beat Argos (sure, blame his age, he was still a mighty dude) and Calvus (a SAVANT that can use techniques we don’t even know and CAN’T know at the level we’re supposed to fight him), but couldn’t even lay a finger on General Julian? The Player, in fact, folds like a pancake from a single strike that Julian throws at us. How? If Julian is so powerful and still alive after fighting Morden, how is he NOT higher in rank?

Something isn’t adding up, the power of The Player character is largely inconsistent, or the power of people around them is. The Player doesn’t even trust their own abilities, as they and Iris think Morden is the strongest one of the three. He may be a curse user after all, but I don’t think I need to remind everyone that WE BEAT CALVUS, AND JULIAN LIVED.

How the hell does powerscaling in this world work?

how do we know that julian is alive

Morden’s journal.

I’m looking at it on the wiki, and it ends right before we get rescued from Ravenna

vetex confirmed it

Once they awaken their full power they will be able to match or even be stronger than the unmatched power of the sun

merciful light/sun paladin with apollo spirit weapons

because a curse user dying in a large very-public fight would be a pretty big deal.

1 - Julian is a curse user.
2 - He ambushed us right after we just fought Carina
3 - He likely hit us with EVERYTHING he had in one strike.

no he just hit us with everything he is in one strike

a savant who spent his time prioritising quantity over quality
yea hes got aether and curse inheritance but that doesn’t mean he was necessarily good at using them, all comes to all he’s on the throne because of his lineage not his strength no?
we all know that like julian is way stronger than calvus, and julian blah blah glass curse oh my god he is glass
maybe the player couldn’t land anything on him just out of inexperience in fighting curse users in general, we hadn’t encountered any prior in the story much less fought one so it must be completely unfamiliar to the player

my guy morden got his curse very recently compared to julian so he must be inexperienced with it

maybe its like in lore he isn’t really aware that he (probably) has the potency to be stronger than iris & morden

Calvus was a bum, and Julian is far more experienced than morden with his curse and fighting in general, only reason they were evenly matched was because mordens curse was far more powerful. So mordens power advantage mixed with Julians experience advantage evened it out, ending the battle with both having serious injuries

Cuz that’s how monarchies work. If Julian wanted, he could probably depose Calvus but he didn’t wanna because he was loyal. He is likely much older than Calvus and was likely a general when he was young, but still decided to stay loyal to the Ravennan crown because that’s just the type of person who he is, same with Argos.

Prime Argos could have become a king after Octavious and most of the generals died, but he decided to stay loyal to the Caeser family. This isn’t an inconsistency in power-scaling, it’s just a simple fact that power doesn’t define rank, it plays a big part yes. But other factors such as loyalty come into major play here.

I suppose you’re right, perhaps I take too many things under an “opportunistic” scope. Loyalty does play a big part, true.

Considering the player is likely related to Zeus, as can be determined from the Eagle Patrimony, (eagle being the sign of Zeus, the weapon also being lightning related, which is what Zeus was most notably the god of, and patrimony meaning property inherited from ones male ancestor) it is likely that we are quite strong, with likelihood we are a demi-god.

General is the highest rank in the Bronze Legion I’m pretty sure. Julian’s a Glass Curse user, so it makes sense we got folded, while Calvus only has Aether Magic and a small fragment of the Apocalypse Bringer curse inherited, so it makes sense he’s not as strong as someone with a full blown curse. Calvus also has a very strong ego and is very naive as seen in his dialogue, and by the fact he underestimated Neviro, a dude that has a spear and inheritance from the Darkness Curse he can’t use at all.

Julian is alive due to his experience as a Glass Curse user for who knows how long, could be a hundred years for all we know. and Morden has had the death curse for a month, and as seen in the Forest of Masts, doesn’t like to fight at all, so he likely doesn’t know shit about curse usage.

I really gotta applaud you for such a logical explaination. This post is peak and makes a whole lotta sense.

thanks lol, I think that some of AO’s lore is interesting despite it having more holes in it than swiss cheese, so I delve into it a lot

There is a lot to be said about the two generals and the king.

Argos is a well-trained and highly experienced fighter. He relies heavily on his physical strength and control, that he has likely used to great effect in countless battles. But these battles, along with time, paid a heavy toll on his health and strength, which is a large weakener for those who rely on physical prowess. He was 30 (made up number) years past his prime when we fought him, and his now long career made him weak enough that we could fight and slay him. If we had fought him earlier, there is no doubt we would have lost.

Calvus is just the obvious. He was trained in a wide variety of combat styles since his was a child since the Order wanted him to become a High Lord. He gained access to the Lost Aether magic, had the best equipment, and the best training, but he was missing two very important factors. Firstly, he was missing experience. It is unlikely he saw real combat in his time since he took the thron, and in terms of fighting, you could consider him to be like a newborn babe, unaccustomed to it. His second major weakness is his lack of mastery. While he has practiced with many different fighting, he doesn’t have a specialty. It is often said that you shouldn’t fear the man who has practices 10,000 kicks 1 time, but rather the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. Calvus doesn’t have mastery of any of his abilities, which makes him weaker overall. For Calvus to have true mastery, it may take him 30 (made up number part 2) years. This is why we were able to fight him. If we had fought a Calvus who had found his method for combat and mastered it, we would have stood no chance.

This means that Argos and Calvus both have what the other acts. Argos has the expertise and experience that Calvus would need to be proficient, while Calvus has the youth and age-defying magic that could have benefited Argos greatly. In this way we see that you could consider them foils, or mirrors of each other.

Julian is the best of both worlds. He has the eternal youth that his Sea Curse grants him, and he has the decades of experience to garner skills and mastery of his Curse. This is why we never stood a chance against Julian, even if he hadn’t ambushed us and it was a fair fight.

As for our character, there is no denying that we have gained strength at an alarming rate. As other people have mentioned, we likely have some of Zeus’s ichor flowing through our veins, which likely makes us learn and grow much faster than other people. This is what the Order of Aesir and what Poseidon saw in us. At the point we fougth Calvus, we may have already had more experience in actual life or death fighting when we saw him, but it is impossible to know for certain. We also have what Argos lacked, being youth and growth. Julian is just too strong. Morden; however, has both factors as well as a Sea Curse, and a powerful one at that. This is how he managed to fend off General Julian, but it would be hard to say if either really won. Vetex has gone on record to say that Julian is not dead, and Julian is heavily injured, and that we will likely see him again. We will learn more at that time, presumably.

argos when we fought him was like mike tyson now compared to in his prime, still a beast especially considering his age, but with faltering health and strength
