How to Actually Get Better At PVP (no meta required)

Step #1

Choose A Build

SELF EXPLANATORY

Step #2

Identify your build’s play style

Different classes in ao have different play styles, the most notable being magic, the zoner play style is natural to them, as they lack close quarter abilities (well should when double blasts are nerfed)

Slower magics, weapons, and fighting styles are usually inclined to close quarters, in exchange for more damage and size, ex: earth magic and iron leg

Step #3

Choose a good gear loadout

In PVP, your gear is 70% of the equation. If your gear is bad, you’re going to have a rough time. But how do you choose gear to use? Currently, there’s no good reasons to use the new stats, so stick to the old ones.

In pvp, there are THREE types of Gear (in my opinion)

  1. Statmaxxer
Ex: High Size/Power Earth Mage, High Speed Thermo Fist Warlock

  2. All Rounder Builds
Ex: Most Builds that focus on Calvus drop (it gives 3 stats)

  3. Counterbalance Builds
Ex: Boxing Warlock with Size, Ice Mage with high speed

To be quite honest, the only really viable ones are Statmaxxers, as you’ll see most builds lean very heavily torwards high speed, high size, or sometimes high agility (with a medium amount of one of the other two).

For this example, I’ll use one of my favorite builds, Crystal Conjurer
Crystal has HIGH damage potential, but middling speed and size. As a result of this, you can statmaxx in either stat, but I choose to statmaxx speed, as it is most useful for high level pvp. I’d likely end up using sunken warrior gear and carina accessories to achieve this.

Step #4

Get COOKED

As I normally say, if you’re not losing at least 60% of your fights, you’re barely learning. Fighting competent players regularly pales in comparison to the average 5 kill 300 hours player you’ll see. The best way to find really good players to fight, is to join the AOSL discord, and wait until someone opens an elysium.

This is where the best pvpers are, and if you actually TRY and learn (unlike some people), you’ll end up improving incredibly quickly. Before you say this doesn’t work, this is quite literally how I learned PVP since WOM, I fought my clan members who were SO MUCH better than me over and over and over and over… AND OVER until I started winning. Then I sought out tougher opponents. At the start, because AO has a very steep skill curve for pvp, you will NOT be winning 99% of your matches. This stage will mostly be learning how to

  • Block
  • Parry
  • Move Effectively
  • Predict
And overall pvp knowledge, like knowing when to use piercing shot (only when they’re in endlag cause ur not BWDareDevil), and knowing how to read opponents.

Step #5

Hone your skills

I know quite a few people who are really good at munera pvp, but cannot fight anywhere else for crap. Doing bounty hunts (of good players) and claiming islands for infamy so that whoever’s claimed it comes after you are both good ways to improve game vision, and learn how to deal with more than one person fighting you (if its over a 1v2, ur cooked LOL)

But yeah, I’d say that’s pretty much all you need to know to learn pvp, if you’re actually interested in learning and don’t want to complain about the meta.

TLDR: I can’t be asked to write one ask chatgpt or something idk

I can’t do blocking bro

its mostly a habit really, I just block as soon as I’m done with a skill

okay if I’m gonna add something of value here

I don’t really understand how people have fun trying to learn pvp when literally one of the crucial methods is to basically just give your friends free kills :fr:

like idk how do you ever realize you get over that point where you’re finally able to fight back because it seems like a self defeating prophecy.

alright I read through the entire thing and

yea idk tbh I just don’t think failing over and over again is a good way to learn

if anything it deters people from wanting to continue playing

unfortunately, practice makes perfect and you aren’t getting much practice if you fight someone worse than you

you will never find someone who’s good at pvp that doesn’t pvp for pvps sake (if that sentence makes sense idk how to word it)

the nature of ao’s pvp isn’t very rewarding at the start, until around 20 hours i’d say, you won’t be able to keep up until your brain adjusts to the stimulation

i can’t think of any skills that are easy when you first start anyway

This is probably just personal bias but I found art kinda easy when I first started

I wouldn’t consider myself bad at AO by any means but I just don’t really get how someone is able to fight against some chud with 1,000+ attack speed and 890,000,000 agility

even with good aim that sounds like a nightmare to fight an OP meta build (which I don’t really have)

I can start listing games that feel rewarding and fun to play at 0 hours.
why would I put up with unrewarding shit PvP when I could do literally anything else lol.

if it “gets good after [ungodly large requirement here]” then its not good.

I don’t think he said it was good?

a person doesn’t make a post like this if they don’t think its good.
it’d make absolutely no sense.

He made the post to show how you could get good at the game, not to applaud the design

level, why the hell would he be a regular pvper and in atleast one fully pvp centered discord if he didn’t think it was good?

That’s like the majority of competitive players in games in general (playing a game a lot while not thinking it’s good)

It’s the same reason an alcoholic would recommend drinks for others who drink despite knowing alcohol is bad

why the hell would somebody play a game they actively don’t like playing?
especially in this example where arch definitely is not getting paid for it.

I really don’t get where you’re going with this.

Why not

Also you can enjoy bad PvP while acknowledging it’s bad

is this bait or are you actually stupid.
