English’s spelling system is a clusterfuck.

I spent 10 minutes here trying to think of how mah-ko and mac-o could ever sound different. They still sound exactly the same to me.

the ‘a’ in “mac-o” is said with a wider mouth with the tongue positioned nearer to the roof of the mouth toward the back. (like in macaroni). To be exactly correct, the proper character to describe the sound would be “mæ-kəʊ,” where the “a” is long.

The ‘a’ in “mah-ko” is more like in “mock,” as in your mouth is open taller and there’s less involvement with the tongue positioning and the sound is shorter. To be phonetically correct, it’d be spelled “mɒ-kəʊ.”

I’m super not an expert on phonetics but this is a general idea from some cursory and prior knowledge

Ah, but the spelling system isn’t bad, it’s just that it’s such an amalgamation of other languages vocabulary-wise that there’s no consistency.
