Did you know that if you turn on your contrast and gamma high, you could see the outline of the islands in the distance without the need for clearsight while sailing in the dark sea?

Yeah I do this anyway.
But I can also give people even more knowledge.
If it is raining (or foggy from being in the further out ranges) this strategy does not work. However, if you hold your camera underwater, you may be able to make out the base of islands that you would normally be unable to see.
Also if a wave goes past your ship you can put you camera directly behind the wave and you can see further through the rain.
