How well do you think some of Monster Hunter's weapon types would work in AO?

Would you use weapons like the Switch Axe or the Gunlance if they were options? If you don’t know what any of these are, ask me and I’ll summarize their functions for you. I for one would love to use a strong axe with a skill that morphs it into a faster blade, the swag axe has always been a favorite of mine.

(This is just an excuse for me to talk about Monster Hunter)

Charge Blade would be a good option as an guard/explosive counter based weapon, drawing inspiration from Monster Hunter Rise. Greatsword is just colossal swords, longsword would be a Nodachi/Ōdachi if it’s added… Yeah Charge Blade and Switch Axe would be the most unique things to add besides lance/gunlance. Switch Axe could be adapted as a agile weapon in sword mode with a counter, but a slower heavy hitting weapon in axe mode. Maybe add a mechanic to encourage frequent switching for that.

Ranged options we got the bowguns, maybe heavy bowgun for high DPS minigun action, but it would be an attachment for ships not for the player (anti-sea monster weaponry). “Light” bowgun would be more of a in-between of a bazooka and a standard gun.

I can see the Heavy Bowgun becoming a very rare ship part, seeing as how it could help shorten those kinds of fights. As for the Charge Blade, do you think its own axe morph would be possible as a higher-level skill?

No that’s core to the weapon, but I could see some higher level Charge Blade getting the that spinning axe head instead of the regular axe. Chainsaw axe with some crazy DPS would be wild to swing around.

That would definitely need a time limit though, along with an appropriate cooldown time. You wouldn’t want to abuse something like that for too long, or the fight wouldn’t be as enjoyable.

“wHaT’s ThAT pOkEmOn?”

oh boy it’s a very fun one LET ME TELL YA

what do they do tho

Basically, the Switch Axe starts out in its Axe Mode and can be morphed into its Sword Mode for different attacks. The Axe Mode can be used for continuous swings to build up power, and it also builds up the meter to use Sword Mode. In Sword Mode, attacks are a bit faster and can even utilize elemental discharges via a phial (basically an explosion).

As for the Gunlance, just like the swag axe its name sort of gives it away; it’s a lance that can blast things. I haven’t used it long enough to be able to put how it works into detail, but you can jab or block with it just like the normal lance and fire large explosive rounds from the tip. Their shots can even be charged up to make the blows stronger. It’s not exactly my favorite, but everyone has their preferences.

Hammer could be a rushdown weapon with a certain gimmick in regards to its charging. In which it could charge up its skills through hitting or possibly even getting hit as a switch up from its highly mobile, aggressive and confrontational playstyle alongside the much faster pace of gameplay in a game such as AO.

I could see an upswing type move or an aerial hammer being its main attack, and the big bang being a sort of combo grab that can be done after a successful hit that could proc after enough charges have accumulated which could mimic the use of big bang during a stun.

no way man it has to be my beautiful switch axe or I’ll riot in front of his house

If a weapon with a moveset that parallels the complexity Monster Hunter were to get added, it would be hilarious to see how a person would react equipping it for the first time and seeing the massive keybind list at the top right of the screen. Looking at charge blade, swag axe, sword and shield and insect glaive.

if a weapon can kill a big monster it can kill a human :+1:

they equip it and 3 different UIs suddenly pop onto their screen

Just tried out switch axe in rise, the counter would fit perfectly in AO, both in cool factor from the animation, and style.

Bullet barrage and blast dash would be good options if Gunlance was implemented/used for inspiration
