I think I'm going to lose my mind

YUP. IT’S ME AGAIN, BACK TO CRY ABOUT THE DECKHAND SYSTEM!

Say hi to Dominguez! Can you fathom a guess what my reward was for grinding up to 250,000 fame (and paying him 500 galleons)

Nothing! His given stat didn’t go up not one bit.

So to recap:

  • Deckhands get progressively more expensive on a leveling system that gives them little to no bonus stats.
  • Not only does the upgrade system do nothing- it’s actually harmful. It costs double the Fame (See below) along with some galleons to get a deckhand to equal quality with one you can just find somewhere.
  • Despite the fact the upgrade system was supposed to be a way to keep Deckhands you like, the outrageous prices and non-progress are a huge deterent.

Now Petersen here isn’t a speed deckhand like our friend Dominguez- but take a look at his fame requirement. He would give the same stats as Dominguez if he was the same category, and yet he costs HALF the fame it would take to upgrade Dominguez. And this isn’t ‘a little bit’, that’s an over a 125,000 fame difference. That’s a LOT of fame.

So, if at level 125, Dominguez costs 250,000 to upgrade from rookie to adept, and 500,000 to upgrade from Adept to Elite. It doubles every time, so let’s follow this math:

Elite to Master: 1,000,000
Master to Legendary: 2,000,000+. There are maybe ten players in the game that can get near this level of fame, and if the deckhands were great, if they gave some godly bonuses to your ship- I wouldn’t care, but like, look at this dude:

Legendary Deckhand- meant for only the best of the best of players. That means his stats must be godly for a ship right?

My Adept guy, 3 ranks below the Legendary guy. Each rank gives ONE Resilience. A barely noticeable difference.

There’s just no point in upgrading, ever. Why did Vetex even bother coding this: It’s more expensive, it gives no extra stats, and it is completely outclassed by the cheaper option of firing your deckhand and slapping in one you can actually afford for half the fame.

All I can pray for is that they are capped to the current level cap, and the difference becomes more noticeable as we near endgame. This is all I can hope for now… Okay I’m done, I’m sorry. Have a good day.

i think deckhands are designed to give so little for terrible odds and costs so you don’t have god boats sailing around deleting everything because someone nolifed bounty hunting for 800 hours before the first update even came out

doesn’t seem like the LEVEL of the deckhands are increasing with upgrades, only the rarity. so you may have to decide to upgrade or fire deckhands as you progress through the game

i will say that fame/bounty costs are only high because bounty hunting is kinda like “hope your target doesn’t have a busted combination of skills that’s not even possible at their level”. apparently being in the navy or syndicate also boosts renown gain, maybe vetex wants to encourage players to join those organizations?

They level up naturally. I noticed when I was trying to upgrade Dominguez when I hunted enough npcs to get 100k and then went “Wait why is he 140k now?” they level up, getting progressively more expensive.

And I’m not asking for a god boat- I’m asking for ample reward for the hours I spent getting this. Do you even know how many npcs got arrested for this? I practically put half the population of the bronze sea away for this one man to take 500 galleons, hours of my life, and give me Zero reward.

sorry i was being misleading about god boats, but i think that even “ample rewards” for a grind to all legendary deckhands would put a noticeable power gap between a level 125 player that hasn’t focused on getting renown for deckhands and someone with a minmaxed boat

you could cut the time required to minmax your boat instead of boosting the rewards, but i’m not sure if deckhands were designed as a hilariously ineffective timesink for boat stats for metamancers or not

The thing is, right now it’s not even a “slightly noticeable” power gap - it’s practically nonexistent.

i don’t think it’s a big deal. deckhands aren’t needed to do anything

Not needed? So you’re saying an entire feature of the game should just ‘not be worth the incredible amount of time it asks of you’?

it’s not asking anything lol

eh im glad the bonuses are really minor and that the stat increase seems to get worse the more expensive the deckhand is
dont want deckhands with twice the stats of ship parts even if it requires more than a million renown, its just supposed to be a minor upgrade to your ship

you shouldnt be grinding renown for the deckhands, its just for the sake of being on the leaderboard. yknow, internet points

No, I want to make my deckhands cool, I want to enjoy the game in other ways then clout farming I want to make a boat prepared for the dark sea and the only way to prepare beyond my already godlike vessel is… deckhands.

I will accept no argument that says this feature should be useless/bad- it asks too much of the player in the first place for too little reward. If that’s the case Fame should be shaved off as a requirement entirely and substituted with something else.

ok but honestly

i definitely wouldnt complain, i doubt ill ever get more than like 100k renown

Let me tell you Waping, fame farming can be very mind numbing. I am not a pvp guy, just hate pvp in pretty much every game that isn’t entirely centered around it. So I bounty hunted npcs. Over. and Over. You get at most 2000 fame per npc, and I had to raise from 70k to 250k to upgrade Dominguez.

So perhaps this will give insight into why I am so frustrated at the fact I did all that for actually nothing. I fell to my knees, screaming to the great sky Vetex is in, asking: “Why God, why have you forsaken me?”

just use kenton, he has the drip

there’s no badge or anything for getting deckhands, just ignore them. they’re a quaint thing for high renown players to have fun with.

idk why you’re complaining that something is too hard for you to get and simultaneously complaining that the rewards aren’t good enough.

the rewards aren’t insane because if they were you’d be complaining about the game forcing you to get them just to compete. just ignore them

Please waste 900000000 hours to get 1 point in hp

No. I would not be, in fact, complaining that the rewards would be made worth the effort. That’s called balancing effort and reward. If effort does not beget reward, then there is no point to the effort.

You’re just being nonsensical here saying that upgrading deckhands should be a waste of time and money. Why? There is no reason that it should give you nothing. I don’t get this absolutely backwards argument that ‘Oh well it’d force you to do it to compete soooo you shouldnt have it’

What? So people who farm to get good boss drops shouldn’t get them because then everyone would be forced to do it to compete? That’s the same line of thinking. If you put effort into something, you should be shown reward, compensation, anything. It’s as simple as that. I shouldn’t spend hours of time and more importantly, 500 galleons, to see not even a SINGLE point extra of speed. You’re arguing that there isn’t any reward and shouldn’t be any reward because… what? That 1-2 extra points of ship speed is gonna make it really unfair for other players? How so? Do explain how a SHIP upgrade, a vehicle with which you get from point A to point B and occasionally hunt pirates with- explain how upgrading that by just a few smidges of points is unfair to the average player.

You can have at most 3 deckhands right now, even if you got 3 speed ones, together they still can’t equal the bonus from a single swift hemp sail without all of them being legendary. It just doesn’t makes sense from a design perspective or a player perspective. Why do you even have the option of upgrading deckhands if it takes your money and time for nothing in return?

in return for what? you’re not supposed to grind infamy for the sole purpose of getting deckhands

I don’t see the point of upgrading deckhand rlly. My deckhand went from rookie to elite and nothing changes

anyway in real terms it’s probably because legendary deckhands are supposed to be late game and we haven’t even broke early game yet. the rates will probably be buffed as the game is developed
