Sailor’s torment lore
I imagine chief Cliffe was a pirate, right?
Well, as such, he probably had plenty of enemies from kingdoms, the navy and other pirate groups.
So, having settled on the island, it was a perfect opportunity to attack him. The navy sent a large force, reinforced by some kingdom ships, to try and defeat this dangerous man once and for all.
Coming in the dead of the night, smaller ships sailed through a reef on the northern side (I assumed the maw is on the west, but the reef is to the right of the maw) avoiding rocks and preparing to attack from behind.
However, a certain navy commander, Neron Faulf (or any better name), was secretly the mole. An old secret ally of Cliffe’s, he always worked against the navy.
As such, before the ships could near the island enough, he quickly jumped off of his caravel onto a nearby tall rock and threw a special potion of his into the water.
As a result, waves started rising, wind blowing and whirlpools forming. It was an extremely potent potion, and the ships could not resist the sea. Hulls were smashed on rocks, masts snapped in half by the wind.
The sea was so powerful, Neron was almost swept away himself. By the time the sun rose, all ships were capsized, wrecked or sunk, and their crews were washed away into the depths, never to be seen again.
The noise, of course, alerted the citizens and Cliffe who saw the whole ordeal. Due to the fleet of rowboats, sailboats and caravels never making it to the island, brigs and ketcheshad no opening to land. As such, the operation had to be called off.
Neron was made the guard captain and master alchemist of the island. To this day, his potions help the citizens with defense as well as everyday tasks.
Meanwhile, the sea has only slightly calmed at Sailor’s torment. Though the ships undoubtedly had tons of loot, nobody ever dared go there, as tens of divers were trapped by whirlpools, carried away by currents or smashed onto rocks.
Sailor’s torment area
Sailor’s torment is a large reef similar in depth to the jaws or stepstones vicinity. It consists of around 20 boulders of varying sizes, some housing secrets, and has roughly 10 partial shipwrecks and a lot of debris.
The area specifically has rough seas requiring 75% stability and a high chance of spawning whirlpools. These are small, but common. The boulders have just some sparse moss growing atop it, as well as a rare seasoning growing there thanks to the potion’s aftereffects.
The biggest shipwreck is a caravel, the very same one that Neron was steering. It is stuck on a group of rocks that Neron jumped on. There is tons of wood debris and a couple of skeletons in the water. A skeleton on the rock has a note that reads “Why did I trust that turncoat I called commander…”.
One of the large rocks is hollow and hasan underwater entrance. Inside is found the same salt mined on the island, some more debris and three kingdom skeletons. The lore is that three unfortunate soldiers were caught by the current and ended up in the cave with few supplies, starving to death.
A large boulder, closest to the island, has a beached sailboat, a crater and four skeletons on the rock. Having barely survived by getting beached, three vice-captains and a major tried to rest on the rock. They were spotted by the islanders and, having nowhere to run, were killed by a precise explosive shell.
A rock the furthest away from the maw and the island has a flat side on the outer edge. Near the rock is a wrecked rowboat. On the rock, hiding from the sight of islanders, is a skeleton of a commodore who took his own life. Near him is a note that says “If only they didn’t trust you, just like I didn’t”.
