It's time to rip off the band-aid, Vetex should replace renown

renown is kinda ass, it just sort of promotes toxicity as any game with a pvp-based leaderboard does
i propose: replace it with something similar to AA or WoM reputation, both games seemed a lot more friendly
the competitive players still have clans and the casuals aren’t caught in the crossfire for simply hunting rivals

I see where you’re coming from but I feel like we’ve had so many renown exploiters and resets that people don’t really take renown seriously anymore

Back in the day you used to watch your back if you even had over 100k renown, now I reset my fame to go evil because I thought you needed evil rep to hunt Evander. I forgot about my fame ever since the Empire Update’s release and I haven’t been hunted once
I remember talking to a friend of a friend that seemed very competitive in hunting, to the point where he would even hunt his own friends. He seemingly had no interest in me at all because I was clanless. I got like 200K something bounty

Maybe I was lucky but I feel like people generally don’t care about renown anymore

i dont care. if the game didnt officially sanction pvp in the form of renown then maybe people would be less inclined to jump others, even if only for fancy titles

this is especially taking into account the upcoming feature that makes npcs not attack you if you have much higher renown than them

in a nutshell, as long as there is a benefit to having a higher stat, such as a title or not being jumped by npcs, then players will grind for it even if it’s at the expense of other players

This feels like the same excuse as people were talking about before deckhands had a rework. They costed renown to recruit back then.

“Oh yeah renown is useful because it can make my boat really fast”

It’s such a stupid and irrelevant reason though, it’s obvious that a huge majority of people wouldn’t hoard renown just for the deckhands?

I know the rivals situation is a little more serious than deckhands but the same logic still applies. People wouldn’t fight each other so that criminals stop attacking them

the few that are toxic grind mainly because of fame/bounty and those fancy lb titles and badges

renown feels like it was made to feel like you were becoming more and more prevalent as a figure in the world (hence why deckhands were originally renown-based aka how well known you were as a captain)

frankly i dont want renown-based deckhands back but anything to give renown that impact that it has literally nothing of outside of pvp would be nice

im not sure if turning clans into primarily pvp is the best idea (in my opinion i think itd be better if there was different types of clans that focused on different things instead of the same stuff) but they already have a big focus on pvp, so its definitely better than renown being the pvp thing

Removing renown doesnt really get rid of the incentive now that empires added MAJOR incentive to fight people. You kill anyone in a clan and violently defend your territory for farming.

I was constantly worried that empires would make the game more toxic and less friendly to casual play and I am sad to be proven right.

which ends up making any clanless player also unable to go to those islands without putting their ship really far away and swimming over which is really inconvenient

Me when I’m brand new to the game and trying to explore and suddenly the island sinks my boat with one mortar spray:

Or when I’m too low level to be targeted by mortars and things just cant explore islands because someone decided to fort knox the entire thing up and rob it of any natural beauty. Seriously. Its so intrusive to regular gameplay, and theres nothing stopping clans from building on clanless servers.

i remember needing to serverhop just to explore cedar arch for the first time when empires first came out

it basically just forbids anyone from going to that island while the clan has it claimed :sob: i love building on islands as a concept but it can be really annoying in regular gameplay

i cant really think of a solution but i did have an idea for a “war gamemode” of sorts that clans could activate which would send them to a separate server for like… war with claiming islands and fighting over them and stuff

i didnt flesh that idea out very much but i feel like itd help atleast a bit with clans taking up islands

we literally saw this happen, too. (assuming my interpretation of this screenshot is correct)
