Learning how to use Gouache Paint

No, this doesn’t have anything to do with it being February 1st. I’ve had a gouache paint set since Christmas, but I haven’t had the brushes or paper to use it. I just got those today, so I can actually use the paint now.

Day 1
For my first time using gouache, I just tried out a bunch of stuff. Nothing special, I just made a bunch of brush strokes on one of my sketchbook pages.

What I learned:

  • Gouache is basically opaque watercolor.
  • To put gouache on paper, take a pat of paint with a painting knife, put it on the palette, add water, and then get it on a brush.
  • My preference so far is to add a small bit of gouache onto the paper and spread it with water. This makes the paint more watery, which gives it some nice texture.

Struggles:

  • I’ve never been good at mixing acrylic paint, which mixes similarly to gouache. I usually end up getting a bunch of paint on the base of my brush and making a thin layer of actually mixed paint.

If anyone has tips that they can share for gouache, I’d love to know what they are.
