Lore Doc changes summarized

Gonna try to summarize all the changes that happened in the lore doc a couple weeks ago. Kinda late but I figured it might be useful for anyone who wanted to catch up quick and easy. Some of these things are already known, but only just recently got added to the lore doc. Prometheus’ part is formatted different then the others, but I really don’t want to go reformat it after doing everything else.

Characters
Prometheus

Now instead of giving magic to humanity instead of fire he now does both. First he gives fire to humanity seemingly at the same time he does so in the actual greek myth and like the myth ends up being punished by Zeus. He stays chained to a rock with his liver being eaten out of a while before an unknown entity frees him and gives him the ability to take another god’s authority. At the same time the entity weakened Hecate’s foresight allowing Prometheus to take the opportunity to steal her authority over magic.

Prometheus uses this power to grant the gods’ most loyal followers in Athens the ability to use the seven base magics which are water, fire, wind, earth, lightning, light, and shadow. The decision to give humanity any magic was controversial but the gods decided to just let it play out at the moment.

Stuff for Prometheus past here is mostly the same, but for a quick recap:
Zeus starts fighting with Prometheus over human’s getting magic. Prometheus is about to win when Cursebeard and co shows up and beats his ass. He’s then forced to make the elemental curses which he does and then his mortal body turns to ash. It’s not enough to stop Durza/Acheron though cause he still necromances Prometheus who then goes on to lose to Theos.

Zeus

He punished Prometheus for giving humanity fire just like in the myth

Cursebeard
  • He’s called Arthur or King Arthur up until the elemental curses are made though I’m pretty sure that’s been a thing since the last lore doc change.

  • Crowned as the most powerful mage of his time sometime during Y112- Y227. Probably kept this title until the curses were made and Cursebeard kinda took over.

  • He now suspects that Prometheus was holding back the true magic from humanity because the hecate shards were giving humans access to magic Prometheus hadn’t granted humanity.

  • He befriended gods who agreed that humans should have magic like Poseidon prior to the War of the Gods. I’m pretty sure we already knew this, at least the Poseidon part, but it’s on the lore doc now.

Poseidon
  • Befriended Cursebeard prior to the War of the Gods
  • Agreed with humans having magic
Theos
  • This might have already been a thing on the lore doc, but there were people claiming he was a more powerful mage than Cursebeard
  • Conjured wings of fire and dodged Acheron’s nuke beam
Durza/Acheron
  • His blast that hit the mountain caused a massive earthquake which did what we already knew and turned the world into islands
  • Lost a lot of the curses and magics he had absorbed as a consequence of putting so much energy into his attack that caused the fracture
Hecate
  • New character

  • Goddess of Magic

  • Held authority over how much magic humans could use. While the other gods could use magic, none of them could control how much humans had

  • Instead of simply dying and becoming a wondering soul like other gods do when Prometheus stole her authority she shattered herself spreading pieces of her soul all over the world which seemed to have become the Hecate essences and shards.

Unknown entity
  • Freed Prometheus from his punishment from giving humanity fire and gave him the ability to take another god’s authority
  • Weakened Hecate’s foresight making her vulnerable
  • More information on this entity, what they are and why they freed Prometheus, will be explained in the later stages of AO’s story
Events
Magic wars
  • Iirc there used to be a thing called the human wars, this is the same thing basically just renamed
  • Seems to have started in Y50
  • As humans grew in their magic power they began to create and conquer kingdoms
  • Arthur rose to become the strongest mage during this time
War of the Gods

Pretty sure not much has changed here since last time, but that wasn’t too long ago so I though I’d run it down again anyways

  • Takes place over the course of Y112 - 227
  • Started after Zeus decided to take away magic from humans and Prometheus came to stop him
  • Prometheus was about to win the war win Cursebeard attacked, defeated him and his forces, and forced him to make the elemental curses
The Fracture
  • Name for the event where Acheron nuked the planet, turned the continents into islands, and created the dark sea
Power system stuff
Spirit Energy
  • Life force that exists in living things
  • Can only be wielded by a god, their offspring, or someone possessing a spirit weapon
  • Especially powerful spirit weapon users can manipulate the environment like making lightning strike or deforming the ground as well as altering their own spirit energy to permanently manipulate their own bodies
  • Can be used to damage or heal targets
  • works with the intent of the user
  • If someone runs out of spirit energy they will die
  • There is an advanced technique that allows a spirit energy user to take spirit energy from their surroundings to bolster their own.
Magic
  • magic users were dubbed mages when the ability to use magic was first given to humanity
  • exists in all living things, though mostly in creatures that have the ability to use magic like sirens, humans, dragons, and supposedly some other unnamed species
  • mages use their magic to extend their life spans by 200 years, but the most powerful mages can live even longer
  • Even humans that cannot use magic have more magic energy than creatures of similar size
  • The amount of magic energy inside someone can increase the more they use magic
  • Running out of magic won’t kill a human, but will leave them fatigued for a few days time
  • Cast from the users body taking visual form and properties of the type of magic
  • Magic energy carries out the casters intent even to a degree of preventing any damage to the environment, but the more complex the intent the more focus, skill, and energy is required
  • If the intent is to harm magic attacks cause damage by clashing with the magic energy of their opponent
  • Magics typically cannot permanently afflict things normally. Stuff like changing the weather cannot be directly achieved through magic, though large amounts of magic energy could cause changes unintentionally
  • All magics can heal to some degree though magics without an affinity for healing heal way less and cost a lot more energy to heal even small injuries
  • The power to use magic is passed down through generations
  • Whether or not someone is born with the ability to use magic is partially random. Children of powerful mages are more likely to be born with the ability to use magic but it isn’t guaranteed.
  • Even those born without the ability to utilize magic can still train to utilize trace amounts of magic to enhance the strength and speed of their attacks
  • humans can learn any number of magics after the first, but it gets exponentially difficult after the first
  • while magic constructs are not permanent they can be willed to last an hour at a time
Sensing
  • ability to sense magic energy and intent in others nearby
  • People are either born with this ability or have to learn it
  • Range can be improved through skill and magic potential
  • Dark sea causes interference making it difficult to sense across it
  • Sensing is a pretty rare ability, especially at higher skill levels where as most sensers can only sense half an island away(Is this a sandfall, Sameria, or anywhere in between sized island? No idea!)
  • skilled sensers can sense the intent of those around them, while great sensers can completely visualize those they are sensing
  • It is possible for powerful mages and curse users to lower their perceived energy so much they become very difficult to sense
Hecate shards
  • Pieces of Hecate’s soul
  • mages could find and use a hecate shard to mutate their magic, creating a lost magic
  • Obtaining multiple shards would allow the user to mutate a magic even further to create an ancient magic aka an advanced mutation
Lesser lost magics
  • oldest lost magics
  • over centuries became more common until a number of children began to be born with them
  • These are the base magics aside from the original 7 prometheus gave humanity
Lost and ancient magics
  • can be obtained through either one’s bloodline or obtaining one or more hecate shards
  • The mages who got these first named them
  • The lost magic(s) someone has obtained or the ability to learn that lost magic(s) can be passed down throughout their bloodline. Same goes for ancient magics
  • very rarely someone can be born with a lost magic
  • magics are typically similar to the ones they mutated from
  • mages don’t lose the ability to use their base magic after mutating it
Curses
  • Not all curses are equal in power
  • Grand fire curses are the colored flame type curses like inferno. They are extremely powerful
  • The more powerful a curse the more difficult it became for the user to maintain their sanity
  • They were named curses because the users were cursed to outlive everyone they love
  • constructs created by curse users can be sustained indefinitely should the curse user desire it
Misc
Dragons
  • magical species
  • seemed to be especially entuned with magic compared to other magical species like humans and sirens as they didn’t need Hecate or Prometheus to grant them the ability to use magic. Magic appears to be inherent to their species

I thought this would be kinda a fun thing to make, which it was but also kinda time consuming. If you think any information here is wrong or might be missing please inform me. If you’d like to see the specific parts where certain information is stated I can get that for you as well.

Is it mutations or lost magic?

WHICH IS IT, VETEX??? WHICH ONE IS CANON???

It’s both they mutate into a lost magic. A mutation and lost magic are basically interchangeable names for the same thing.

Same thing goes for Advanced Mutation and Ancient Magic.

Yet more terms that will inevitably lead to confusion

You forget that Durza/Acheron Lost almost all of his sea curses and all of magics he absorbed

“My lore? If you want it, you can have it! Find it! I left everything that is currently canon there!”

With the importance of dragons increasing lately, I wonder what the in-lore effects of bathing in dragon blood will be.

Permanently dye your character and all vanity items red
You can wash it off with 1/30 chance the first minute with a bath but if you don’t make it on time you become red

Oh yeah let me put that

The only curse he has left i believe is Absorption curse I believe because it literally the first curse he obtained

As far as I can tell the lore doc only states that he lost a lot of curses and magics, not which he has left. I’m not putting anything that isn’t stated in the lore doc even if that’s true cause I’m trying to keep this summarization to just things directly stated on the lore doc.

“currently”

Well you can’t expect it to be canon all the time!
Oh also you need 9 random lore posts if you want the currently correct lore and not the last update on the lore document

i think that the concept of grand fire curses was retconned due to the fact that two of them were completely removed (Darkflame & Promethean flame), and that the current ones just exist like your average ancient fire-type magic’s curse version

  1. Due to your necropost, there are 14 gay werewolves in your area
  2. No? Morock still has aethereal flame and Warren probably has inferno

I know Morock is still canon. But my point still stands

By Grand Fire curses as a concept i mean it as a group, what i believe that happened is that the group was retconned and instead the current standing (Scorch, Inferno and Aethereal) were moved to the elemental curses since they have a magic version (which they technically were already since there was already magic versions of the curses)
