Magic Scrolls & The Future of Mages

So a recent reveal from Vetex and testers has changed the way most people thought magic would work in later game Arcane Odyssey. It seems pure mages will have 1 base magic and 2 rare (lost/ancient scroll) magics.

Previously, it was commonly believed that endgame mages would be walking around with 3 Base magics and 2 Rare magics. We can all see where the assumption of 5 magics arose, since in World of Magic there were 5 magic slots in total;

So the natural assumption was that eventually you’d have 5 magics – 3 from your minds, and 2 from scrolls. There also hadn’t been anything on the trello descriptions of the rare magics that conflicted with this line of thinking, so it continued to be taken as a fact and many mages used it as a foundation for planning out their builds. In fact it was only recently through the QnA session that Vetex hinted at base magics having some form of “upgrade”.

However, there may have been some factors that make this new information not as surprising in retrospect;

  1. From their descriptions, most rare magics seemed to be either a stronger version/direct upgrade of a base magic (sun, flare, lunar, diamond, etc) or the combination of 2 or more base magics (Equinox, frostmetal, poison lightning, etc).
  2. Managing 5 magics could definitely be overwhelming, even unrealistic depending on how the game’s combat ends up turning out.

With these in mind, a system like this definitely makes a lot of sense. I’m interested in finding out more information on the topic as it becomes available, but it’s very possible that we won’t get further updates on the situation for a very long time as rare magics are as far away as they’ve always been.

I think the biggest takeaway here is that while it may be a lot of fun planning out the full extent of your build, this game is still in its infantile stages and game development can be quite volatile, with drastic changes being made at any time. So keep in mind that nothing is truly final until it’s been implemented into the game in order to stop yourself from being disappointed about a system not living up to the personal expectations you’ve played up in your head.

This would explain why you can just read a scroll and get a new magic, and it would make much more sense progression wise as you will keep upgrading your character instead of awakening twice and then being done with your character.

yeah i always thought it was weird that you could just learn a new magic when the lore has always been that you can have at most 3 minds and your magic isnt just chosen by you in lore, the lost/ancient system seems more like a replacement to mutations which i do prefer as its basically mutations but you can get one from any other magic instead of just the one you mutate

I actually thought 5 magics would never be used effectively, big reason I found more interest in paladin.

So honestly im actually glad this happened for the mages, that leaves paladins probably with 2 magics but that will be good enough.

oh thank god i really like mages but i thought i was gonna be outclassed. I doubt i have the IQ to use 5 magics at the same time in one fight

Oh wow this is very good to know, I like it personally its not so overwhelming and makes you think.

ah dang it i actually WAS wanting 5 magics for mages: lightning + magma + snow for general “synergize with all magic users” support, one lost magic to synergize with lightning, and life magic to heal others

oh well, at least savant will have the funny 2 magic 2 fighting style 3 weapons gameplay

been doing this since 2021, i never really expected there to be 5 magics nor for every lancient magic listed on the trello to be added. everybody else be like “future lunar main” but like ehh you don’t know if that’s really being added my guy

I do it a lot but it’s mostly for fun, if the lost magic I’m looking forward to doesn’t get added I’ll be a bit bummed but wouldn’t take it to heart since I know that anything that isn’t confirmed is subject to change

oh yeah i definitely plan builds as well but i make sure not to get attached. and im also a complete stats guys and perfectionist so i’ve never been able to make up my mind for most of them.

this seems to directly relate to mastered and awakened spells, as shown in the archived lists on the trello.

Would the order of magic chosen affect what you are allowed to change into. Say the the first and third can but the third cannot? It would be quite the bummer if you couldn’t choose which magic slot to change.

From what Fluect said you can likely choose to replace any of your base magics, which would be the ideal situation

Great, if that was the case, I am going to be using Earth the whole way now alongside one heavy magic (magma or metal).

if i go conjurer can i have 2 base and one ancient?

probably not, at most you could have one base and one lost for hybrids

the lost/ancient will probably replace your second base, but i guess it is possible for it to fill your third mind
