Glad to see this is not an unpopular opinion. I have had discussions about this and people have seemed to agree so it’s nice that the broader community agrees as well.
Negative synergies serve almost entirely 1 purpose with 1 niche secondary purpose, the first beaing realism and the second being to prevent people from going a certain combo. I feel like the second reason should just be ignored entirely, screw that, it helps nobody and I am sure that nobody is even deluded into thinking that it would help them in any way shape or form. I just don’t think anybody would logically come to the conclusion that it somehow helps them, I think everyone unuversally understands that it’s limiting.
In regards to realism, realism must ALWAYS be weighed with other game factors. There is never a case where it shouldn’t be and never a broad case where it isn’t. So wth that being said, we should take a look at the pros and cons to see if this is worth being a factor.
Just to clear things up: Clearing statuses should 100% stay, I’m just talking about dealing less damage to targets with statuses. I’m not talking about sea interactions either.
Pros of Negative Synergies
- Realistic
- Disincentivizes anti-interaction loadouts if you consider them a bad thing
Cons of Negative Synergies
- Unenjoyable feature
- If somebody picks a magic with a negative synergy and is unaware they’re pretty much screwed, not everyone reads Meta’s doc or the Trello
- Limits magic combo diversity
- Better allows for anti-interaction loadouts if you consider them a good thing
- Limits aesthetic choices
Personally I think these two pros are not enough to defend against the amount of cons this presents. At the most, negative interactions from other sources suh as rain or other players can stay, but my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd magic should not hinder each other’s damage. Clearing each other is fine though.
