Explanation:

As with my previous two suggestions, this is to further increase the enemy variety and loot pool found within the dark seas.
This time adding something more akin to the existing Sirens.

Now I know that in actual Greek Myth, Mermaids and Sirens are literally the same thing, but they could be distinct threats in the dark sea.

The Enemy:

Unlike Sirens, which lure and kill their prey with disguises and tricks, Mermaids would be ambush predators you would have to watch out for when sailing within the insanity layers of the dark seas.

Visually, they would appear to be humanoids with a distinctly fish-like appearance, scaled skin, fins, claws, the whole deal.
Heck they could even have a fish tail for legs while swimming.

It would be possible to spot a Mermaid’s nest within the base fog distance before you’re spotted by them, but just barely.
When a Mermaid group sees you, they will leave their nest, rapidly swim towards your ship at swimspeed jewel speed, latch onto the ship, and climb aboard.

From there they’d begin attacking.
Mermaids would, like sirens, have a specific set of tools they can use.
They would be capable of utilizing water, acid, sand, wind, sailor fist, and their claws.

Additionally, their attacks, unlike any other enemy, would bypass ship damage reduction.

When Mermaids die, temporarily, the island they came from would emit a bright light/glow/some other indicator to show the players where they came from so they can go over there and get the dark sealed chests they were guarding since otherwise it could be a massive pain to figure out where they came from.

Their nests would, ontop of dark sealed chests, contain unique carryable cargo crates that could sell for a small fortune if you managed to get them back to the bronze sea, but would also repair for twice as much as normal cargo.

The Drops:

Once Mermaids are defeated, they would drop unique items.
1: The Mermaid armor/accessory set. Much like Sirens, they’d have a unique outfit that grants stats.
2: Mermaid’s claws, their Siren bow equivalent drop.
3: Mermaid’s eyes, a potion reagent that grants high tier revealing, functioning identically to lurker eyes.
4: Mermaid scales, another potion reagent that would grant decent tier luck, giving a non-fishing alternative to the potion effect.

Feedback is appreciated.
I plan to continue to write more suggestions like this one as time goes on.

Eventually, if it isn’t clear by this point, I want to see every potion effect in the game obtainable through normal dark sea activities.
If that means exploring, harvesting, fighting, treasure chests, sealed chests, ect.

I’m down for more any enemy variety so you have my vote

seems very annoying to fight
I like it

Make this manual because I don’t wanna accidentally include this whenever I tell Edward to fix the ship.

that’s up to vetex lol.
the main reason I want to see carryable cargo crates around the dark sea is specifically for repairs anyways.

Vetex could add that in as Archaic Cargo from Dark Sea shipwrecks that could spawn on certain islands

Idk why but I feel like they should use tridents

Just be prepared for another wave of fanart.

That sounds way too annoying. There should be a low level cap for them.

Not a fan of these, ship combat is pretty bad atm, encountering one of these in a high range would be an unavoidable death sentence similar to alantean brigs.

i am terrified of the fanart

Mermaids would be cool, but this idea seems noticeably lower quality compared to the other enemy suggestions. They seem to just be enemies that swim fast and use sea-themed attacks.

I think any new enemies to the game should have unique attacks and movesets, instead of being the same randomly generated NPC enemies with different limitations and like one or two effects.

Yes, that’s their gimmick.
They attack you while you’re sailing unexpectedly unless you’re paying attention.

Sounds like a fair gimmick, but you might as well have atlanteans rise from the depths or have a new shark type (except shark combat sucks). I think making mermaids basic enemies outside of their method of aggro isn’t doing the theming (evil mermaids) justice.

Then they wouldn’t have unique drops and they’d be recycled enemies.

Exactly why I’m not writing sea monster suggestions lol.

That’s fair but I don’t really know what else they could do.
Much like my other suggestions for enemies, I just went with what felt like the most logical thing they’d end up doing as their main gimmick lol.

More dark sea enemy types are always welcome. Also I had this cursed idea of there being a small chance to fish out a mermaid while fishing in the dark sea.
