I think this could be fine if the method of obtainment was actually fun, instead of “you have a chance of getting exactly one of this thing randomly” or “this thing comes from an obscure, rare, and unfarmable event”. But a bigger issue is that their effects come from magics, and they are usually just “more damage in a different way”, even the stun or knockback ones. Even then, most people aren’t willing or don’t care enough to use a consumable to get an advantage in a fight.
Maybe they could have a “pure” or “clean” heart hiding inside a grotesque outer shell. Or maybe you could have an ingredient that made harmful food but had a large benefit attached (drawback food).
I think this is because there’s a bunch of potion reagents that are so obscure or rare to get that nobody can or wants to gather enough of a stock of them for them to be useful.
that’s why I’ve added replacements for all 4 sea monster reagents in my enemy suggestions now
power, invisibility, poison, and blinding.
One thing though. I think it would be cool if you brought back the Gaian name for the hosts taken over by plantlife, and have Nymphs implemented as their own thing based on mythological nymphs similar to the current mythological sirens. They could be an equivalent to sirens found in the same place as these Gaians.
I chose the name “Nymph” because it fits with the naming theme “Atlanteans” started of taking something often associated with beauty and wonder and instead having it be a nightmarish abomination.
It just fit too well thematically for me to pick anything else lol.
I actually looked online to see if there were any other mythical cities like atlantis that were associated with a nature deity, but I didn’t find any.
As for more unique mythological creatures
I could see Minotaurs, mermaids, and gorgons being added.
I mean imagine you’re sailing around and suddenly a bunch of half fish people climb on your ship in an ambush because you sailed too close to their home.
Even though mermaids and sirens in greek myth are literally the same thing, they could be distinct here lol.
This actually brings up a really good concept. Rather than Atlanteans being the only outcome of Dark Sea corruption, different circumstances can lead to different outcomes. Atlanteans are obviously the most likely outcome, considering the rain that corrupts them is literally everywhere, but there are other things one can be exposed to. It’s not much in terms of mechanical variety, but it is aesthetic variety, and that’s the one I care about.
I’ll make a suggestion similar to this one at a later point. All that’s left to do now is make the images for it. Until then, I call dibs on rockmen.
Would this mean that a guy who stayed on their ship the whole time could become a wooden mannequin man? That one’s going in the pending suggestion list.
