Proposal

Add a new type of seige weapon: the catapult

How catapults would work

you can put a catapult in one of your ship’s seige weapon slots. These machines aim like mortars but don’t fire cannonballs. Instead, you can order your crew to load up gunpowder barrels (or load it yourself) and the damage scales with the kind of barrel you launch. If you have no barrels, the catapult will use some supplies to launch a rock instead.

Reason to add/change

  • adds more variety to siegge weapons
  • adds a new use for gunpowder barrels and supplies

hhmm
i mean it takes some time and effort to get gunpowder barrels
I’d say abt 2-4?

ohmygodyes

this has given me an idea.

Yes. Yes. So much yes. Nuclear warfare. THIS IS AMERICAAAAAA

this game is becoming more and more like black flag isn’t it

Personally, I think different siege weapon types should be vastly different from one another to promote variety. I think that gunpowder barrels, if they are added as a siege weapon, should be similar to how Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag does it. In Black Flag, barrels are essentially just traps put in the water that deal major damage whenever an enemy gets in contact with them.

The one issue I have is that this suggestion seems half-baked. How much does it cost to make a barrel? Can you store barrels in your ship like supplies or magic storage? Does it require me to have barrels on my deck? Can I make explosive barrels now and carry them wherever? What’s the cooldown on using the catapult? How much does it cost to throw a rock? How much damage does the rock do?

As a concept, the suggestion is cool don’t get me wrong. I’d love to fling explosions all the way to Fort Talos and commit some war crimes, but the actual meat and potatoes of this suggestion is very lacking.

ngl this would be pretty fun

first of all, the point of seige weapons (at least the developers’ point) is to attack and destroy raidable bases (fort castrum and fort montu). In Arcane odyssey, you don’t make barrels, you find them on islands and collect them to put them on your deck. The cooldown and supplies cost of the catapult would be up to the balance team to determine if this does get added. The damage of the gunpowder barrels will just be the current damage of exploding one, and the damage of the boulder would also be up to the balance team.

This is lowkey not a bad idea, would be fun to use in certain situations

Personal takes:

  • I’m unsure how we would go about “loading” gunpowder barrels if they aren’t already on the ship, would there be a prompt if we get it onto the ship to store it in the deck? If so, can we control if we sell these barrels or not?
  • Obviously, this should be just as risky (if not more) than the regular method of gunpowder barreling an enemy ship and detonating it whilst they’re busy. Sinking ships in this way is a dangerous idea, but tossing it is slightly safer. Or would be, if the gunpowder barrels didn’t get boosted by extreme velocity and enchants.
  • LEGALIZE NUCLEAR BOMBS.

it’s basically picking up the gunpowder barrels you already have on your ship and yeeting them at mach 10.
pressing shift and clicking will automatically load and shoot the 3 highest dmg barrels you already have on your ship but you can also load them manually.
if there are no gunpowder barrels, it will use boulders.
if there’s no supplies, womp womp ig

That makes the weapon significantly more dangerous to use, as anyone could blow up the gunpowder on your deck.
At least using supplies can do the trick… expensive, though… we need a way to expand supply capacity if we do that.

it would probably be for bigger ships and the main point is to reward preparing for ship combat more

ah, so mortar, except, tedious, and the possiblity to one shot someones boat

im not gonna go “ha ha funny funny nuclear bomb” im just gonna flat out say this doesnt feel like a good idea

I’ve seen you already criticize a suggestion earlier for very little reason other than “it defeats the purpose of blocking” (cooldowns exist, no matter how much haste you have, and only works if you DO block), so I think you’re just being disingenuous with your criticism here.

I could understand complaining about

, but I’m going to have to say this: Even if it could oneshot a boat, most boats will gradually become more and more armored, so anything that - with skill - can knock off a chunk off of a player, NPC, or Boss boat would be well welcomed.

Again, skill is the main factor that they’re hanging on by with this weapon. Even regular mortars take skill.

So, no, it’s not “so mortar".

I do like the idea of catapults, would be nice to have at shipwrights the capacity to purchase “Heavy Ammunation” for said siege weapons, that its kept on a new storage for your ship. And the catapult can consume said Heavy Ammo depending on what type of ammunation you have equipped to it.

thanks for the reinforcement, remember the main point of this is preperation
