Notoriety rework

Notoriety rework
effort 5.0 3 quality 5.0 3 reasonability 4.5 4

I am making plenty of topics recently. All funny until I then hibernate for a few years.

I dislike Notoriety. Having an active wanted system is cool and all but it does nothing but spawn ships upon ships on you, and then you have to pay half a ton of galleons to deplete it.

A lot of this was inspired by the cool animations JTN has made, and also a couple thing Night said in patreon chat a few days ago.

Proposal

Turn notoriety into a system of gain rather than loss. At the moment, I try to avoid having notoriety as it just isn’t a fun system

Basic changes

  • Notoriety increases slower, make it more rewarding to gain, but only if the feature itself is improved.
  • Every time you die, notoriety decreases by a large amount, it decreases less to player kills than to death by NPC.
  • Each “Star” of notoriety will add a new feature.

Notoriety 1: Naval Attacks

At 1 star of notoriety, the Grand Navy has taken note of your presence. They will send out ships occasionally to attack you, when you are sailing.

  • Naval Attack ships spawn 1 at a time, and will increase in strength as your notoriety increases.
  • Naval Attack ships do not count as a ship under the standard spawn limit of ships
  • As notoriety increases, the frequency of this will also increase

Notoriety 2: Scout Parties

At 2 stars of notoriety, the Grand Navy is aware of the danger you pose, and will send out ships to scout out the island you are at.

  • Works similarly to Notoriety at the moment, with a Grand Navy caravel or so sailing up to whichever island you are on, the crew leaping off, and going to search for you.
  • The crew will fight you if you are spotted, however they will also fight any other bad rep player.
  • The levels of the Scout Party increases as notoriety increases, along with frequency.
  • Only happens if the Grand Navy knows your location

Notoriety 3: Hunting Parties

You pose a threat to the peace of the sea, the Grand Navy has sent out a specialist group to find and arrest you at all costs.

  • This group will only spawn if the Grand Navy know your location
  • The group spawns a distance from you on the island you are on, and will head straight to your location to fight
  • Can not spawn on overly small islands
  • Usually stronger than Scout Parties
  • Will increase in level as notoriety increases

Notoriety 4: Active Threat

The Grand Navy has issued an official warning: [Island] is under attack by a wanted criminal. It is requested that all residents stay indoors until the threat has passed.
You have been found on an island, the Grand Navy will now launch a full scale raid against you.

  • At this level, the notoriety 1 and 2 features are disabled
  • During an Active Threat, music will play, and Notoriety 3 features are disabled.
  • Threats can be activated by having at least four stars of notoriety, and either killing a Hunting Party or triggering the notification that the GN has been alerted to your location, which instead is replaced by a notification alerting you to the threat.
  • Threats can only be triggered on civilised islands.
  • On specific Kingdom Islands, it would be cool if the Kingdom’s own forces will participate in fighting against you as well.
  • You must survive a threat for ten minutes. Dying to any GN/Kingdom NPC or GN player will cause you to lose the Threat and be arrested.
  • This does not apply to non GN players
  • Escaping an island during a Threat will cause you to lose some bounty, the GN considers you coward and doesn’t see you as such a big risk anymore.
  • You cannot leave during a threat without combat logging.
  • “Winning” a threat will give you a large boost in Notoriety, Galleons, bounty and bragging rights.
  • To make it worth your while, it could also drop Exotic Enchant scrolls rarely.

Notoriety 5 - Admiral Dispatched, [Late game feature]

So you know JTN’s Admiral dispatched animations.
Yeah. Add that. If I can find one person who doesn’t want that in game, I will eat an icecube.
Admiral [Name] has been dispatched to your location by the Grand Navy.
Same rules as a threat apply, however it’s just you and the Admiral duelling above a city.
[This specific feature is not designed with the intention of it fitting with the Bronze Sea, instead this should be for very late game when Vetex has the time to add this]

  • At Notoriety 5, providing you are above a certain level threshold, instead of a Threat, an Admiral will be sent to your location.
  • This can only be triggered in the late game seas to prevent someone like Adkins spawning and killing everybody in Ravenna.
  • Let’s say at the end of AO, there’s four different admirals which can be spawned this way. They can be attacked by any bad rep player, however will mainly target you. Each admiral will have a specifically designed moveset, theme, etc to make them feel like a fully fledged boss. The Admirals will each drop a powerful item to make them worth fighting.
  • Before this feature is added, Notoriety 5 should just trigger a stronger threat.

I don’t want it in case of memory leaks :smiling_imp:

Honestly, pretty valid reason (It feels like every new addition has at least one memory leak)

so I want to revamp it

im not a bad rep player but i wholeheartedly agree with this

Menu music starts playing

Notoriety V player: “Why do I hear boss music?!”

Possible annoyance to any under leveled bounty player progressing the story. Should be kept to players that have notoriety instead of all bad reps. The scouts could justified that they have a bigger threat to catch instead of every bad reputation player.

This as long as they don’t despawn before either you or they die (or you get way out of range)

By all means despawn the grunts if there’s too many but it sucks to get 3 majors, one gets stuck in geometry and despawns, the other does fuck all and despawns, then only the third guy is left and you kill him before 3 more disappointments spawn
