Name comes from Jäger, which is a German word, so really transliterating the word from whatever Isayama wrote is a double transliteration. It might’ve come directly from the English word jaeger, but I highly doubt it, since he keeps borrowing Germanic stuff into his works, and he keeps bringing up imagery of hunting and shit. Also because that English word is not a very common one.
I guess the alternate spelling with the y is to help English speakers know how to actually pronounce the name, since English doesn’t ever pronounce the letter j as a y except in some loanwords and other weird circumstances. Or they might’ve spelt it that way for some other reason, I don’t really know.
