I truly believe the curse of bad live adaptations have been broken, and I’m not just saying this because I love One Piece. There were quite a few changes to the plot as well as missing characters but I guess it was due to pacing the East Blue
The two best adapted characters were most definitely Mihawk and Buggy. 10/10 for those guys. Luffy definitely felt like Luffy, although there were a couple lines that I felt didn’t fit his character. Zoro was very epic throughout and had many cool lines, but I felt as though his fight scenes, besides the one with Mihawk, made him seem as a complete unstoppable force. Nami also did a pretty great job. Sanji’s hair did get some time to adjust to, but I believe he adapted his character well into live action. For Ussop, I felt as though he was a bit more confident than what he truly was in the anime during this time, but he was good too.
There were some characters who had their sex or skin color changed, but it didn’t mind me too much as there’s a lot of characters. I would prefer if they would’ve stuck to what the original characters looked like, but there weren’t that many changed characters so I can’t really complain. Although, on this note, changing Sham into a woman (one of the cat siblings in Syrup Village) actually made the character better than the anime in my opinion.
Villains:
Alvida: I’d imagine Alvida to be a little older, but when I thought about it I realized that when she slims down in the anime she is younger, so it makes sense. I feel as though she could’ve been a bit more meaner 7.5/10
Helmeppo: I found him pretty funny and fit the character really well. Especially that one scene where Zoro finds him playing with his sword.
Axe-Hand Morgan: I found him alright, but I think it’s just the character not the actor himself 7/10
Buggy and Mihawk: 10/10 no complaints
Arlong: Okay, the fish people look a bit weird so it gets some time to get used to them. Personally, Arlong didn’t look too bad, it were the other fish men who were the problem. I felt as though the actor could’ve been more cockier in the beginning, but he does go into that cocky side later on in the show. 8/10
Kuro: I think Kuro did a fantastic job, he was even scary at times. I really appreciate that they kept the glass adjustment pose just like in the anime. The costume looks like it does in the anime, but because it’s live action it doesn’t look all too great 9/10
Don Krieg: This guy was only in the show for like 3 minutes, and he wasn’t even at Baratie. The costume looked good, but I think the actor chosen was a bit too young. I can’t really rate him as he wasn’t even part of the story.
That Pirate that kidnaps Luffy: Looked really good adapted from the anime 8/10
Other Characters:
Shanks: I liked Shanks, but there were times that he felt out of place. Not out of place for his character, but his actor didn’t really look like how I imagined Shanks at times. I think he did good acting wise 6/10
Garp: As the show went on, I was getting worried for how Garp was written because although he’s stern, he’s also a happy guy. It’s only about halfway when we actually get to see him laugh. 7/10
Koby: Pretty good job with Koby, just wished he called Alvida names in front of her face and punched Luffy like in the anime, which is fault of the writing not the actor. 8/10
Sham and Buchi: Pretty great adaptations for their characters, as well as the sibling dynamic in the live action 8.5/10
Nojiko and Pin-wheel guy: Good adaptations, just felt as though they could’ve felt more like their characters as they felt a bit more gloomed out 7/10
Zeff: Very good by the actor and also looked and felt identical to the anime 9/10
Merry: Why did they have to kill him off
He did look like Merry though and also had his personality so 9/10
Kaya: I really like Kaya in the live action and how sweet she is. 8/10
Roger: Pretty okay 7/10
Narrator: Had a great narrator voice, could’ve been used more 9/10
Cabaji: Looks exactly how I imagined him 10/10
