So basically I want to major in art for sure, but I’m uncertain if I should double/triple major in Korean and/or dance
I also plan to go abroad to Korea in my Sophomore/Junior and likely Senior years (or summers)
The school I’ve looked into so far (and very minimally since I just started looking today) is UW Madison, while others I’ve consdiered are MIAD (Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design) and possibly those in the Chicago area.
I know it’s extremely vague, but I’m really unsure of how to research this stuff, let alone what I actually want to do. Any advice for people already in/have been in a similar situation?
Majoring a language is good if you have a clear vision on what you want to do, If you are planning on working abroad to the country which the language is used. Although I can say that learning a language at school can be either rushed or paced too slowly, not saying it is bad though. But overall you should go with what you really want to do as I am not to judge only being in 9th grade.
Aside from choosing double/triple majors and what you want to be, imo some of the biggest things you should consider for college are the availability of your major(s), costs, and location.
For sure you’re gonna want to make sure the college you’re going to will have your majors and/or any program that you want to enter.
After that, costs are a huge thing to consider. Even if the college you want to go to is your dream college, you gotta figure out if it’s worth the possibility of being in huge student debt (of course this depends on where you want to go). Going to a community college to get your general education requirements done and then transferring to a university is a pretty popular choice on saving costs, though I don’t know how it might differ in your state. As a reference, the community college I went to was ~$1000-$1400 per year while the university I’m attending is ~$6800 per year. And the higher end universities are $10k+ per year. While student aid will help, it’s best to still be frugal, especially with the economy being so jacked up thanks to COVID.
Then lastly, location is a pretty big one too. Is it possible to commute to the college relatively easily and if so, how long would it be? If the commute is too long, then would dorming at the college be a possibility? If you do dorm there, then you gotta figure out the costs of that, which can often be a hefty price.
And that was my wall of text on the matter, hopefully it was somewhat helpful. Most of the info I gave was based on my experiences in California, so yours might be somewhat different. I also can’t say much on studying abroad, since I didn’t do it. My friend said it wasn’t too much more expensive than normal, but again that’ll depend on your college and destination abroad probably. Good luck on your college endeavors !
Glad you found it helpful! By no means do I want to rush or pressure you, but planning ahead is definitely super important for college, that way you minimize the chance of switching majors a ton. I mean it isn’t bad since you’ll be trying different things, but with the cost of classes it’s risky. But you should still definitely focus on and enjoy high school, it’s gonna speed by
I suggest you primarily focus on the major. Find the best art school you can and (hopefully) get in. Check if they offer those other two. Career wise Korean seems like it has more to offer than dance, since you could be a translator of some sorts. Maybe you could even be a teacher, who knows. It really just depends on what you plan to do in life and what you need to fulfill that plan.
I have basically decided I’m not doing uni rn. I am focusing on the military (Marines specifically) and after some time maybe get a degree. I wish the best of luck towards your art career. One of my buddies wanted to do that but she ended up going over to Game Art & Animation, which I presume she is also fine with.
I haven’t been in this situation but I have given it some thought before and have friends who have been/are in this situation. Gl to you!
