Overanalyzing Chaos Or Something

Hello everyone, posting for the first time here. I hope some of you will read the whole thing, I’d really love to hear your guys’ opinions on it.

The following schizo rant discusses AO lore that’s probably very obvious to some of you, especially lore enthusiasts, but I’ve decided to share my viewpoint with you guys anyways. In this post I’m going to give it a try and give an in-depth explanation of Chaos’ behavior and properties. Correct me if I’m wrong somewhere thank u.

  1. Why is Chaos drawn to destruction in the first place?

Excluding Greek Mythology, I believe Chaos is drawn to evil and destruction due to it being aligned with entropy itself. Allow me to explain:

According to the lore doc, Chaos is described as “somewhat sentient”, implying it possessing a rudimentary consciousness (or perhaps a higher level of intelligence that we cannot even understand), and that it actively seeks to expand its influence, akin to our own Universe’s mysterious exponential growth of space via dark energy (or matter, as written in the lore doc, even tho dark matter is basically the opposite of dark energy but whatever :nerd:).

While we cannot make entirely correct assumptions on how other beings’ thinking processes work, as we almost always instinctively project our own human traits or behaviors onto them, it seems like its “intelligence” is not rational but more instinctual, driven by a need to bring disorder directly or through Magic. This makes it react to environments (such as the Dark Sea, Makrinaos’ catacombs etc.) or entities that create the said disorder and destruction.

Magic, Chaos’ creation ( :fr: ), is known for its variable outcomes of usage. When used with harmful intent, it directly channels Chaos’s raw destructive power. It is said that magic’s effects often escape the caster’s control (e.g. collateral damage to environment), which emphasizes on Chaos’s inherent unpredictability and affinity for unforeseen consequences.

In real life, entropy is a passive, inevitable process tied to energy dispersal and the irreversibility of natural systems (meaning systems of any kind naturally progress towards disorder and cannot go back to their initial states, unless energy is expended to maintain order).
Whereas in AO’s cosmology, entropy is reimagined as an active, quasi-sentient primordial force – Chaos. The core idea is that both inevitably pull everything towards decay, until everything is faded into oblivion.

  1. Why is Chaos drawn to evil thoughts?

From my understanding, Chaos manifests through malevolent thoughts because such intentions — greed, hatred, violence — seem to resonate with its essence. Evil thoughts are naturally chaotic, disrupting harmony and generating that instability Chaos thrives on. Evil acts (murder, war, torture, you name it) inherently create disorder in one form or another, making them natural attractors for our beloved primordial force. The more evil destabilizes the world, the more Chaos’ presence strenghtens, eventually leading to it fully manifesting into the physical plane and wreaking havoc. Maybe this isn’t the best example, but remember what happened at Akursius Keep - where Chaos manifested and destroyed the fortress that was essentially built on the blood of thousands of innocent people.

Could it be the reason behind the cataclysmic event of Y1800 in the Old Sea? Future updates may tell the truth, unless there’s some old top secret forums screenshot of Vetex saying something. :frsleepin:

  1. Why is Chaos drawn to evil beings?

Pure evil beings represent Chaos’s core traits: destruction and power-seeking. These entities become targets for Chaos because their actions (e.g. war, corruption, destruction) amp its reach and power. Its a loop where evil beings use magic energy, which is derived from Chaos, to inflict harm, which in turn strengthens Chaos.

  1. Why Chaos cannot be controlled?

Chaos’s resistance to direct control likely comes from its ties to natural forces. Just as dark energy evades direct manipulation and detection, Chaos operates beyond mortal or divine command. Attempts to harness it (e.g. activities of Seekers of Sight) inevitably risk corruption (e.g. Banished King), as its energy inherently rewards destructive intent and often resists orderly usage.

Small clarification:

  • I assume Chaos’s strength grows universally over time and wherever evil occurs, but its ability to physically interact with reality depends on localized concentrations of evil. Think of it like a gas filling a room (Chaos’ rapid expansion across the universe), but burning explosively only where a spark hits (e.g. Acheron’s suicide explosion :explosion_magic:, which attracted Chaos to Earth and resulted in Seven Seas’ near-complete destruction).

With all being said, Chaos remains an eternal, destabilizing force in AO universe, growing in strength where order fades into nothingness.

But that’s just a theory. An ARCANE theory…

“Chaos is drawn to chaos because it is probably related to chaos”

correct

My question is why chaos is sentient in this universe, since entropy and chaos are real concepts in our world.

I guess magic energy brought it to life? Well actually chaos IS the energy so does that mean places with no magic have no entropy? Idk weird thoughts here

i assume chaos and creation always existed and were always “alive”

idk how to answer the other questions properly though, those are the type of questions we might never get an answer to, since vetex probably haven’t thought such details out

the most likely outcome would be that chaos is in fact omnipresent and expands alongside the space of the universe from all points simultaneously, whatever that might mean

get what i’m trying to say? :frcryin:

So just, normal chaos but alive because yes

we might never know the true answer

this is actually the reason science often dislikes the idea where there exists a god responsible for creation of our universe. we solved the problem - we now know the universe came from god, but where the hell did god come from? its a problem that is way worse and more complex than the original problem ykwim

lwk what if we met creation through a burning bush that’d be fire I think

And besides, chaos and creation both made the universe, I’m sure it’s safe to say they ARE present everywhere, since their energies are within things
