Passive effects for each fighting style

Adding small passive effects for each fighting style that fit that style’s, well, style could be an interesting way to make fighting styles be even more varied.

  • Basic Combat: Slightly increased running and swimming speed. Since players start with it and it would feel weird to become slower after learning a fighting style, maybe you’d only get this if you learned it from the teacher at Whitesummit;
  • Boxing: Lower stamina consumption when climbing (because boxers have strong arms);
  • Iron Leg: Higher high jumps (because of the strengthened legs);
  • Sailor Fist: Longer breath time underwater (useful for generating saltwater meter);

Not sure what would fit with Cannon and Thermo.

I don’t imagine implementing this would be too hard, and I don’t see it making certain fighting styles stronger than others just because of these passive effects.

Thermo would eventually take less overheat damage due to training with heat for so long

Cannon fist would deal cannon damage to ships instead of just regular damage(if they don’t already)

Seems like a good way of making Fighting Styles more interesting. If this gets added, it might be difficult to keep those effects unique as more Styles are developed, though.

I’d personally make Boxing have slightly increased dash distance instead (since boxing is very mobile), and basic combat having slightly reduced stamina costs overall.

Honestly would like to see this be a feature for the mastery system we have. Gives it something else besides being a relatively annoying system for changing fighting styles.

Partially unrelated, but if this became a thing it’d probably be better to rework mastery.
Make it harder to grind, reduce requirements for basic techniques and higher, and make it so becoming a master at a style is what could lead to us upgrading it.

also agree with mastery rework. I get what vetex is trying to do but beating up npcs with m1s because these npcs cant block just to unlock basic techniques isn’t really a fun system. I think all basic techniques should be unlocked, it should be harder to get, and there should be more benefits like these passives here. Lost and Ancient techniques can be locked behind mastery that’s fine. Not sure how to fix the problem of beating up simple npcs with m1s apart from give diminishing rewards to these set npcs, maybe someone has better ideas.

Boxing already has a passive effect, though. It’s the 15% block bonus, remember?

This isn’t as stupid as I thought it would be, I like it, and makes sense.

very interesting, but basic combat could be something of dealing a bit more damage or attacking faster, running and swimming is a very niche thing to buff, and there are alredy plenty of things that do it
Thermo fist could decrease the side effects of overheat or give resistance to burns from fire
Cannon fist could deal extra damage to ships

Alternatively, maybe Cannon Fist could slightly increase the range of ranged attacks? Which would, of course, also affect itself.

How about faster sprint for Iron Leg yeah :wink:

i love shark hunting, i want more air for my sailor style, so yes i would want this, and i also agree for this to be for mastery.

the damage would prob be more

Yeah I forgot about the mastery system while making this post lol. Would make sense.

@ThatOneGuy

What about knocking and karate? Impact, radius, and vampirism?

Presumably not mentioned in this, because they have not appeared in AO yet.

Great idea, but i really do think it should be kept 100% to mobility or niche enviroment benifits. Maybe vampirism users gain better vision in dark locations.
They should not be directly combat related, since i see the passive as being about showing what your body has improved at, by training “X” fighting style

Yeah since they’re not in the game yet there’s really no way to be sure what effects would really fit with the styles.
