honestly I still can’t believe anyone played AOPG but that goes to show every game would have at least ONE thing that will keep people coming back no matter how unoriginal(or trash) the game is
I can understand why you’d want to give up on a game because it’s too similar, but every game except for the very first ones (like Pong and Asteroids) were based on another game at least slightly. Take the concepts and put unique spins on them (but make sure it’s also FUN and not intrusive to the game).
I have a lot of concepts for games that are inspired by other games, but are made to have some different charm(?). My favorite concept? Based on Nuclear Throne, Touhou, and AO. My most recent one? Based on White Noise 2, which was based on a game meant to give Xbox 360 owners the right to a Slenderman-like experience (which was just Slenderman because it didn’t make an effort to be different, other than a buff Slenderman and a backstory). It’s fine to make a similar game, as long as you attempt to give people a reason to play it over another.
Like I said, I’m not forcing you to work with me regarding the game. I always support my developers doing what they love doing over the game. I never want my developers to experience burn out because they’re handling two different games or multiple things at once. It can get draining and I always stand by that.
ask yourself this
were you happy making the game?
if the answer’s yes, keep doing it ( unless this is your main source of income or something then uhhhhhhhh )
if no, then yeah maybe its better to spend time on something else
why cares so much about being original and unique? as long as you and some other people like it thats good enough ( at least, thats what i think )
game devs do that all the time tho?
especially if its something special/unique/signature of them
the older ones can be a lesson/testing/whatever so the latters can be better, thats how most things are improved no?
how was i supposed to word that wothout making it look like slave labor
