The intention was nice and all but when was the last time you saw suggestion stars accomplish literally anything but derailing suggestion posts because somebody ‘did it wrong’ or whatever.
All they ever end up doing is making suggestion posts more toxic for no benefit.
We all already know that anybody with actual authority couldn’t care less about the stupid stars, if anything’s going to influence them, it’d be a massive surplus of votes.
Additionally, it causes some people to just make a comment with high stars instead of voting for some reason, and that sucks.
On one hand, I do agree that they generally promote more negativity than positivity.
On the other, they are a useful tool to indicate the varying qualities of the suggestion without needing to outright comment on them, as most users will not be doing so (in terms of spelling out why they think a certain way about the idea) regardless.
yea no the star system is good its just people getting butthurt when their suggestion isnt well thought out/low quality, also self suggestion is a bait to get people to automatically dislike a suggestion so im on the fence about it, like true you can remove the ability to do it but it wouldnt matter imo
actually now I think about pretty much most derailments come from the suggester self-rating themselves. This derailment often getting worse depending on the users reputation or how frequent they make suggestions while self-rating themselves though at the same time I rarely enter suggestions and I at a possibility, always run into those types of suggestions
Personally, I see stars by readers as a quick and easy way to give feedback towards the suggester, unless said suggester doesn’t take low-stars too well. There’s always gonna be someone caring about anything even if its trivial
or blah blah blah its just forum tradition to slime people out
good for what exactly?
do you actually look at that to make a judgement on a suggestion without reading the thing yourself?
as far as I’m concerned, that’s another reason to remove it.
form your own opinions.
I’d rather see an actual coherent discussion where people express their opinions and make legitimate criticisms than “5 stars!”
blegh, kill the entire option, does nothing good for anyone.
Nobody should take them as legitimate criticism or to gauge a suggestion’s quality because they don’t tell you anything useful, that’s what words are for.
I usually set the bar really low when it comes a bunch of strangers staring at a suggestion. There people can make their stars and staying quiet and others can choose to form their own opinion (Stars acting as a reinforcement for their opinions), I usually witness those who want to try and provide feedback while staying quiet/limited. Besides, this place can’t have a proper discussion most of the time in suggestions without it devolving into drama because there are those who like to be aggressive and sound aggressive.
(As for “see stars by readers as quick and easy way to give feedback” I mean not straight up making ranks, saying good its good, and then leaving.)
But really, this pretty much contradicts why stars should be kept, stars don’t matter when the vast majority give everything a five whenever something sounds remotely good. And I ask of people to “create a small amount of feedback” yet I set the bar so low
Yeah this is probably what I’ve been wanting to look for instead of stars. Though outcome still may be the same, but at least it ain’t three separate sections of “reasonability, effort, and quality”
You do, but there’s a rather significant difference between being willing to comment “cool idea, keep cooking” and “okay so in this essay, I’m going to break down exactly what makes this idea befitting of the game.” The latter of which is what I mean as a “comment,” as the former is effectively just a mechanism for leaving the rating.
no matter how you put it, a star rating is utterly useless as criticism.
it doesn’t tell them what they did right or what they did wrong.
I dunno about you, but if somebody isn’t willing to explain and support their opinion, I don’t want to hear it.
Same reason I had to stop including polls in my suggestions, people would just use that and not say anything, and then they added this garbage anyways and I have the same problem again but worse.
People are saying stuff, but it either:
1: Has nothing to do with the suggestion because people are talking about the stupid stars.
2: Is vague because they think the stupid stars are good enough to tell me anything.
