So boats ARE returning () I know that not everyone is happy about this but I for one am. I used to be against them but…walking for 999999999 hours isn’t fun, so now we have a transportation option!
Since boats are the solution to the aggravatingly slow walk cycles, how fast should boats be on average? I say on average bc ofc stuff like the frigate will be slow, it’s a massive battleship. But if boats are TOO slow, we’re back to square 1 with transportation being slow and un-interesting, which is my biggest fear.
Class today we are covering basic boat construction 101.
Rule 1: The thinner your boat the faster it goes. But the thinner your boat gets the harder it is to maneuver. Furthermore, thin boats are less seaworthy than “wider” boats.
Rule 2: Bigger boats are slower than smaller boats… but bigger boats can mount larger engines. That’s why a battleship could go faster than a destroyer. Make it long and thin, and throw in much larger engines. In a sailing world like AO, the bigger your boat the more sails you can cram on it. Smaller boats are also far less seaworthy.
Rule 3: The heavier your boat is the slower it goes. Don’t go around putting weights on your boat unless you’re tryna make a submarine.
Rule 4: The bigger your sails the faster the boat goes. But the more likely your masts are gonna snap so you need bigger masts, so you need a bigger boat, so on and so forth.
Rule 5: Boats can have different speeds depending on their hull type. Flatter boats are faster… but less seaworthy. And there’s a limit too. Rafts with sails crammed on top won’t cut it.
What does this have to do with this topic? Well here’s the thing. Base speed depends on a lot of stuff. Your battleship is actually capable of going faster than the other guy’s sailing boat. I see this a lot and it’s disappointing: the smaller boat is like twice as fast as the bigger boat, even if that smaller boat is like a barge with some laundry for sails.
The fastest sailing vessels emerged towards the end of the Age of Sail, that is, the clippers.
Look how massive those sails are. Also note how thin, flat, and light the hull is.
Clippers never took those sails down, to the point that they were literally partially underwater during heavy winds.
Now if you have something like a first rate ship of the line, i.e. HMS Victory
That’s not built for speed. So really, what I’m driving at is that boats should have base speeds depending on logic and purpose. The rowboat should be slow. The clipper should be fast. “Base speed” should depend on the boat itself.
fast enough that they can be used for battle and so travel isn’t boring.
but not so fast that the sea feels small or things at sea can be passed right by
