Positive Rep NPCs can attack you yet you cannot defend (Rep Shield)

What were you doing before bug occurred: Attacking a dark wizard with a low-level file at “friendly” rep. While attacking I accidentally hit a nearby NPC wizard which caused them to attack me. I killed the dark wizard and I was promoted to “Protector” rank, which made it so that I could not attack the NPC attacking me.

Steps to reproduce: Attack a positive reputation NPC while below Protector rank. Rank up to Protector while the NPC is still attacking you, the NPC should still attack you and you will not be able to attack them because of the reputation shield.

I apologize for the low quality images, at the time I did not have a recording software ready and I was only able to use Roblox’s recording.

I mean it’s more a feature than a bug as far as I know. Npcs can simply attack anyone and also damage anyone, but they do need to be provoked by damaging them if you have a reputation similar to them.

I mean I was getting chased by that one NPC for like a whole half hour and I couldn’t do anything. Maybe I should move this to suggestions as a change request, but you should be able to at least attack an NPC if they do damage to you.

Yeah I guess you could do something like that.

But honestly, even if it’s not a bug, I’ve seen vetex add things that were less of a bug than that before in the bug section of the trello.

If I hear paper chorus one more time I’m gonna go mad.

It definitely is a bug. Vetex didn’t intend for positive rep NPCs to attack people with a positive rep shield.

not a bug, more like an unintentional calculation

I think you should be able to damage any npc you’re in combat with

It’s not a bug that you can provoke a friendly npc at a low reputation and they would still hunt you if you go back to a good reputation, it’s just that npcs stay provoked forever as far as I know. Reputation simply doesn’t keep a npc from chasing you if they were ever provoked by you at any point.

There isn’t anything made to prevent this in the first place, it’s just how the game works so far. It’s a problem, sure, but the game does work properly after all.

Yeah I think there should be a toggle switch for damaging npcs. Someone made a suggestion about this a while ago.

Why does everyone think a bug has to be a mistake? A bug is anything in the game that is unintentional. Vetex did not intend for this to happen, therefore it is a bug.

no a bug is something that causes this to happen for example:

bugs are just unexpected outcomes

In other words, things that Vetex didn’t intend to be in the game?

Ok, based off of what people have said, should I move this to change request on #suggestions? I’m not sure whether or not this counts as a bug, its not a physical glitch and nothing is wrong with the code, however this is something likely not intended and it isn’t like it is changing a feature like an option to disable the rep shield entirely.

according to your reputation and story

appears that you triggered npc before you hit “Reputation shield”

Yes, I accidentally attacked them before I was protector, then when I defeated the dark wizard mentioned in the quest I have I was promoted to the Protector rank. The npc continued to attack me and damage me while I was not able to attack them back because of the rep shield. This should not happen as it leaves me no way to defend myself and I should be able to attack them if they are agroed on me.

Also that chase part was afterwards, the npc kept following me around all of the Southern Riverlands spamming paper blasts at me. I still couldn’t attack them so I brought em to a buncha dark wizards where I thought they died, but miraculously after going to Summer Hold and back they found me again.

No. It is a bug. It should be in bug reports.
