Potential Dark Sea Monsters

I’ve been reading a lot of Greek mythology lately and noticed how many different kinds of sea creatures appear in these stories. This makes sense since, geographically, Greece is near the Aegean Sea and the larger Mediterranean Sea. We know that these monsters exist in the Arcane verse because most of them are directly tied to the gods, and the sirens are already present. Here are a few that caught my attention and could potentially be in the Dark Sea, or maybe even the War Seas or in the story depending on how things go.

The Hydra

The Lerneaen Hydra is a massive sea serpent with nine heads, eight mortal, and one immortal. It was said to be the offspring of Typhon and Echidna, but was raised by the goddess Hera.

I could see the Hydra being a raid boss, needing multiple people to take down, but being soloable at higher levels. The immortality thing would also give a lore reason why it always comes back, since you’d never be able to destroy the last head.

Scylla and Charybdis

They are probably the most well known sea monsters so I’ll skip the background

Scylla and Charybdis are two dangerous sea monsters that work together to sink ships. For this encounter, I think it would work best as a pre-made island that spawns both of them in the same area. Scylla would be on land and be killable but Charybdis wouldn’t have a health bar and be more like an obnoxious obstacle. Charybdis could occasionally shoot out broken ships it’s consumed as projectiles in an arc.

Circe

Circe was a powerful enchantress, so powerful in fact that some believed her to be a goddess (in some stories she is one). While not necessarily a “sea monster”, Circe is a key character in The Odyssey and a powerful figure that could either be an enemy or ally depending on how her character is used. She could also easily be in the War Seas instead, either in the story or just out in the world. Circe is known for making powerful potions and herbs so her island could be home to a lot of rare catalysts, reagents, and ingredients.

<----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Typhon

Typhon isn’t a sea monster, he’s THE sea monster. Typhon was specifically created by Gaia and Tartarus to fight the Greek Gods in the Titan vs Olympian War. When the Olympians saw him they all ran except for Zeus and he whooped Zeus’s ass. Although, Zeus won the rematch after help from Hermes, but this feat is a clear example of just how powerful Typhon is. After his defeat he wasn’t even killed, he was imprisoned in Tartarus. The reign of the Gods has long since passed so Typhon could have escaped. Like Circe, he also has potential to be in the main story but if he was in the Dark Sea he’d DEFINITELY be an endgame raid boss.
<----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->

There were a few other monsters that I liked but I picked the ones that made the most sense. A few of the ones I chose have pretty complex designs so they would either need a talented modeler to rig them or have their design changed somewhat to implement them in the game. Let me know what you think below.

Just add Sexy White Eyes. :\

massive white eyes

super late but i just had to add cause this is an amazing idea

Typhon is also described as a god of volcanoes, and what’s the one place with giant obsidian volcanoes?? THE EPICENTER

(we need more non human enemies in this game)

As most, you’re gonna get an upscaled mesh that charges at the player.

the only boss we could probably see in the dark sea is a kraken or a sea serpent
(There’s drawings of them in the abandoned structures)

not necessarily to do with DARK sea monsters but just sea creatures in general, there could easily be more variety than “fish that bites you”

an idea i’ve had is a big pistol shrimp that only crawls on the seafloor but can snap its claws to fire powerful shots at targets who try to keep distance

or just a buffed out mantis shrimp that’s basically saitama
