I dunno how to start this off so I’m just gonna say; I don’t think this should be put as “change request,” solely because Karate isn’t added yet, and for all we know, will never be added. It’s just been shown in the Trello, which has been mostly accurate so far, so I’m going to assume it will be added in a future Bronze update, or with the Nimbus Sea.
ADDITIONALLY, I guarantee there’ll be someone who gives this a rating based on solely the first couple sentences and goes “I ain’t reading allat!” To those of you who stick around… uh… thanks? You get a cookie!!!
I do, however, apologize for this absolute text wall. I just enjoy rambling and making essays on my own time. Is it a weird hobby? Yes. Do I care? Yes. It’s concerning.
So uh… yeah.
I just wanna express an issue I thought about with Karate, and some ways it can possibly be fixed.
The Issue
So uh… Basic Combat. The first Fighting Style we’re introduced to.
IT’S REAL GOOD. It has the highest natural Damage Affinity other than Iron Leg or Max Seawater Sailor Fist, along with a Size and Speed affinity of 1x.
This can be compared to Boxing or Heat Thermofist, with a Speed of 1.3x. Not too shabby.
As for Size, it’s only bested by Iron Leg (again, at 1.15x) and, surprise surprise, Seawater Sailor Fist (1.2x)
So Basic Combat is a jack-of-all-trades. Good damage, good size, good speed. It’s, well… basic. Not meant to be spectacular in any field. But still usable.
But here’s where our issue comes in; it has no special effects. Every other Fighting Style has something that makes it special. Sailor Fist grants Soaked which can be combined with Lightning/Ice. Thermofist grants Burning, which is an amazing DOT. Iron Leg has Bleed. I could go on.
Even Boxing has something special; constant knockback and a passive Block Affinity that works similar to Shields.
But Basic Combat has absolutely nothing. Nada. Nien. None. And that’s where it falls. It’s just too basic. Too in-the-middle. On it’s own, it’s good, but once again, it finds itself outclassed. If put on a tierlist, it would likely be dead center. Not the best, not the worst. Just centerpoint.
But… Karate?
Yes, this ramble on Basic Combat’s faults does relate to Karate.
According to the Trello… lemme pull a quote… Karate is “a fighting style similar to real life karate which makes enemies more susceptible to grabs, and causing grabs to do more damage.”
What I take this to mean is “Rushdown or other grabs have slightly bigger hitboxes and deal more damage.”
But here’s our issue; this just applies to grabs. Additionally, there’s no additional effects other than a cosmetic belt similar to Boxing’s gloves mentioned. No stun, no bleed, no DoT’s whatsoever. Not even something like Soaked that acts as a catalyst for more versatile effects.
Just… better grabs.
The Issue 2; Electric Boogaloo. And a Proposal.
So, how can we fix this? If Karate was added in it’s current state, it would be useless, falling behind other Fighting Styles, and if it’s lucky, maybe making it onto a Juggernaut’s second Fighting Style as… “filler.”
So, here’s my ideas for Karate, INCLUDING STATS!
Ahem.
Karate:
A fighting style learned to teach discipline and focus, causing grabs to be much more effective."
Damage Affinity: 0.825x
Speed Affinity: 1.15x
Size Affinity: 1x
Extra Effects:
Grabs: Have a naturally higher Size and Damage Affinity of around 10%
Status Effects: Dazed
“After being thrown around, your vision is warped and you feel nauseous.”
The effects cause your movement to be slowed by a bit, your damage to be slightly reduced, and the edges of your screen to be slightly warped.
This would happen whenever someone is hit by a Grab from Karate or a Karate imbued Weapon.
This references Karate’s versatility in usage. It can be used defensively or for counter attacks, hence the lowered speed and damage… but also, wouldn’t you feel nauseous after being hit by a Sledgehammer? Yeah, well so does your character.
As for the uh, “lore” reasons why this effect is applied… people with Karate are uh… better at tossing people around? So good it causes nausea? I dunno.
Imbuements: Weapons imbued with Karate will have the same boosts and effects applied to their grabs as well.
And yeah. That’s my proposition.
From what I could tell, Karate wasn’t going to have any special effects other than better grabs, and I felt that wasn’t enough.
If it needs buffed further… uh… give it a slight Blocking Affinity (about 2-5% instead of 10, as to not straight up outclass Boxing. This would, once again, reference Karate’s defensive usage.)
And yeah. That’s it. Karate better be good or I’ll boycott this game!!! I will I swear!!! Cross my heart hope to die stick a needle in my eye I will!!!
