As part of the Full Release update, I’ve decided to finally add a PvP On/Off Setting
BEFORE YOU COMPLAIN, please read the reasoning and restrictions below
Current Planned Restrictions + How it will work
The current plan is to make it so that you can ONLY toggle PvP off if: you are NOT in a clan, are not on any renown leaderboard, and have under 300k bounty/fame. You would still be able to be in an NPC faction while having PvP off (such as the Grand Navy), but not a faction subclan
The reason for this is since the game is already divided into regular servers and clan servers, clan servers would naturally be full of players that have PvP toggled ON, while the regular servers would be full of mostly PvP OFF players. This means that the PvP toggle would basically not affect players who prefer open world PvP, since they would still be put in servers full of other players who have PvP ON. It also provides a way for players who hate open world PvP to play in peace in servers with players who are similar to them.
Assuming you are NOT in a clan and have under 300k bounty/fame, you would be able to toggle PvP ON/OFF whenever you want in settings. (Though obv you would not be able to turn it off mid-combat) Issues with this proposed idea:
- You can no longer be in a clan if you want to have PvP OFF. You would still be able to be in a faction but not any subclan or regular player clan. The obvious solution to this would be to make some kind of separate clan type that is mainly focused on PvE activities that allows PvP OFF players to join/create them, but it would need more thought put into it.
- Regular servers (non clan servers) would still have some PvP ON players in them if those players have PvP ON but are not in a clan. This would be slightly annoying for players who aren’t in a clan but want to PvP, since they’d be getting put in servers of mostly PvP OFF players, however they would still be able to teleport into clan servers if they wish OR simply join a clan.
Duel System
Players with PvP OFF would still be able to PvP if they wish by using the upcoming Dueling System, where you can invite a player to a duel wager for galleons. More will be announced about this feature when it is fully completed.
Reasoning for a PvP Toggle
Originally I wanted to replace the Agility stat on gear with something else since a lot of players only use it to run from fights, and after this plan leaked I saw a lot of negative feedback about how it basically would force players to fight even if they don’t want to, so I decided to go back on that plan and do this instead. I’ve also seen people complaining about PvP ever since the game released, some people even asking for it to be removed entirely, and I can definitely see why it can be annoying (I’ve been witchhunted by groups of max levels while progressing a new file)
I know the Agility stat would still be a problem and it will definitely still need some adjusting, but the hope is that this change would mean people run less often using it, because if they have PvP ON it means they want to fight
I was thinking of just adding harsher punishments for random killing or killing players with a high level difference, but these would not stop the core issue and players would still experience being random killed at any time regardless of the punishment for the killer.
I do understand that this removes a kind of “immersive” aspect of the game where you can just attack any player you want even if they don’t want to fight, but you have to consider the victim as well. If a player is playing the game only for the story or progressing a new slot, being attacked by another player is just an annoyance and something they don’t want, and if it becomes too toxic they may even quit the game forever since they can’t play it the way they want.
I’ve also seen the two sides of the community (PvEers/PvPers) arguing a lot since release, and I genuinely think there isn’t really a way to make the two types of players get along unless this change is done. This change would allow PvEers to play with other PvEers in peace, but also let PvPers play in servers full of other PvPers who are less likely to run or start an argument when they are random-killed
Why this is being announced
I want this change to happen and I think it WILL happen - but I wanted to gauge feedback on the current plan for it and see what the response is like first, and see if people have any additional ideas for it. I know people are going to complain regardless (they always do) but I really think the current plan of basically having non-clan PvE servers and clan PvP servers is a good solution for both sides.
