Question for game devs

hey so i’ve been working on this project for almost 5 years and i’ve been at rock bottom in terms of motivation for the past like 2 months. I saw how vetex basically got all that motivation back so quickly and every time i even get to the point of opening studio i don’t even wanna bother staring at code and usually just go do something else it kind of inspired me to ask around; how do some of yall like lose all motivation to work on games or really anything important and just kinda snap out of it

I start daydreaming about my eventual fame and fortune.

But seriously it depends. For me I just watch Anime and TV shows until I get in the mood, or just work on another project to take a break. Although for me it’s different since I have to do it to survive so I separate my personal projects from my work projects.

(Coding in C++ really makes you want to die sometimes)

I don’t, I make it another Reminder On Why I Am A Failure and discourage myself from ever doing anything ever again

its not really about snapping out of having no motivation

if you lose motivation, take a break, do anything else just have fun, and eventually you’ll get that motivation back for the cycle to rinse and repeat

This has happened to me a few times now, I’ve found the most effective remedy is to literally just give in to the urges and then refuse to even think about the game for a few weeks until I feel better again

I usually just get tired of one part, so ill just work on it but just in a different way.

Oh i dont want to code?, ill just write out how i want a certain environment/enemy to be instead, get tired of that and ill just work on logos for factions/symbols.

If my motivation is really bad ill just pause all work on it and go read or watch something, not as productive but i might find a fun and/or interesting concept there i would like to use, and have said concept spiral back into wanting to work on it as i want to apply that concept (happened multiple times already)

For starters you should stop seeing motivation as the normal driving force, It sucks.

Vetex seems to rely on it a lot more but it doesn’t work like that for most people.

(It doesn’t work for him either his progress is extremely slow actually)

Think of motivation as a additional booster, not the base resource you use to do things.

Idk if this counts as motivation but something that did make me feel like getting my pixel art done sooner was making these cards for my trello which made it look kinda cool

Probably won’t even use them for the game but it was fun to make them

Personally I like to see my willingness to work on things based on stress. The idea is to imagine stress as a resource and the more you have it the less you will want to focus on something.

I simply just cut things and ignore stuff that stress me out so that I can focus on whatever activity I do.

(Most people take stress from things they can’t control and they waste time thinking about things they can’t change, aren’t willing to change or things that just don’t matter enough to them)

I also just like doing multiple things for game dev and because I’m still quite new to the stuff I just do the thing I enjoy rather than what I think I should do importantly

(I swapped to Godot from Roblox studio recently so coding and pixel art became new things I had to worry about along with composing)

Sometimes I just do music or learn coding or sometimes I just have a streak of pixel art cuz that’s just what I feel like doing

Oh yeah also logging what you do everyday is very helpful, I used to do it publicly but I think I prefer the private log cuz it’s less stressful.

Overall take care of your personal well-being more, Keep your health in check. Many unrelated things connect and fixing them could re-direct more of your energy to things that actually matter to you. Fix your sleep schedules, Cut off bad social problems and clear away thoughts that are a waste of time.
