Regarding Durza/Acheron's Undeads

I’ve been wondering about this for a while now, and sought out answers.

With the massive amount of Undeads that DurzAcheron has created, we can surely assume that at least a few would be left when the Peacekeeper defeated him, but what would remain of them if there truly are remnants of his army?

My guesses:

  • They would die alongside their master
  • They would continue to follow his command until they run dry of magic energy or are defeated
  • They would be freed from his command and would actively find ways to sustain their magic energy or die after some time

Of course, these hypotheses are built around the thought that Undeads raised by Dead Revival magic are powered by the magic energy granted to them, but if that isn’t the case, what would then be the source of their undeath?

Dude I was literally thinking about this like an hour ago.

Anyways as far as I’m aware we really don’t know much about them, so any of these are equally likely. I do kinda like the idea of how many of them survived becoming just wandering vessels devoid of purpose, maybe seeking out some vague idea of what they wanted in life. Could be some story potential there.

It could just be a one and done deal where they’re brought to life and just kinda live until someone kills them again, whatever magic is inside them not really having an expiration date. Unless something has already been said that contradicts that and I just don’t know about it.

I do suppose that it’s also possible that even they didn’t die once their master did the ensuing destruction from chaos probably could’ve killed most if not all of them.

I do believe the peacekeeper is one of the revived, just on accident. So if they can keep going, so can the rest.

Q: What happens to Durza’s undead minions when he dies? Do they get complete free will?
A: They return to ash.

Q: Why doesn’t The Peacekeeper turn to ash too?
A: The Peacekeeper isn’t controlled. They are self sustaining. To use an analogy, it’s like starting an engine to revive someone. You have to provide it gas. But the player, even though you started the engine, provides its own gas.

Q: So are all of Durza’s revived minions draining his magic energy?
A: Yes. The stronger the undead the more magic energy they drain.

Q: How exactly does The Peacekeeper sustain themselves from turning back to ashes?
A: They generate their own magic energy. They do not take from Durza to use their powers. Their whole existence is thanks to magic radiation.

really old info from tech but it’s the only stuff on the subject matter that I’m aware of

peacekeeper was a mistake, durza fucked up

the info is old but i doubt it was retconned, so its probably still all true

Wasn’t it a whole thing that the undead from Durza’s magic were functionally immortal?

Like you could destroy them, sure, but they’d eventually just get back up.
That also being the justification for respawning ingame.

Unless you were to, say, completely drain them of magic energy, it wouldn’t especially matter how tattered and broken their bodies are, given time, they’d just piece back together.

Thanks for digging this up, it answers plenty of questions!
Though now I’m left wondering if Durza/Acheron ever bothered intentionally making sentient Undeads, after all, he’s a researcher at heart.

New question aside, it fits in with the narrative of the character I was building, so it’s great that I don’t have to change it.

I think I came up with a good theory as to how dead revival magic functions, so I’ll link it here.

I don’t think undead revival can do the spirit energy part by itself otherwise there probably would’ve been a couple more than 1 PK running around. I think I have a theory pretty similar to yours, but differs on where the spirit energy comes from. I think on account of Durza having basically become a spirit by this point after exploding himself he did end up unintentionally imbuing some of his own spirit energy into his undead revival magic when he accidently revived PK and PK just kinda got lucky that little bit went to him.
