shields are literally just weapons that can block now
they dont have an m1 attack to compensate, and maybe one less skill than the other weapon types (i forgor)

idk they are very good against npcs that dont dodge like pirates and bandits
in pvp, yeah sure melee m1 sucks unless you are fighting someone who never moves, but gun m1 is good. its like an extra skill, since they tend to have comparable power with a long reload (at least for the musket)

thinking back to it, its probably because i was using an iron shirld and didnt have enough stats in weapons, so it only showed the first skill
I think vetex once told me shields will have 5 skills like any other weapon
