Since Deckhands are being completely separated from Renown, there’s no reason for strictly PVE players to grind for it. This actually presents an opportunity to create a “soft” barrier between PVP and PVE players allowing each player base to enjoy the game the way they like without impeding on each other’s fun. Here’s my proposal.

  1. Renown can only be gained through PVP
    Killing other players with renown will be the only way to get your renown up. However, there will be some caveats. Players you kill will have to be within a certain threshold close to yours to grant renown. PVP Tournaments will also grant lots of renown and incentivize PVP enthusiasts to practice and join. Players who only engage with mostly PVE content will therefore not have much renown and won’t be worth killing unless you’re a genuine asshole or something.

  2. Emphasize Renown as a flexing and clout system of reward
    Having high renown should give the player a sense of accomplishment other than having a arbitrarily high number, which is somewhat an accomplishment on its own. Under the revamp high renown would affect things like.

  • Castaways will sometimes know your name when you interact with them and will interact differently depending on your rep. If you’re a positive rep they’ll be happy you found them. If you’re a negative rep, they’ll be afraid and beg for their life.

  • Different NPC ships will call you by name when interacting with you depending on your rep. A positive rep will be greeted by GN ships and cursed by AS and pirate ships for example.

  • As a negative rep, your wanted poster will appear in more places around the sea other than just bounty boards, scaling based on your leaderboard position. As a positive rep, you’re poster will appear more often in criminal outposts.

  • Top 10 Leaderboard players have their noteworthy exploits presented across servers on the Agora. This would only apply to events like a monarch defeating a Warlord or vice versa, A Warlord getting arrested or executed, A Warlord capturing Silverhold, an Admiral being assassinated and etc.

  1. Player v Player Kill Limitations + Duel System
    If a player kills the same player three times in a row. Neither player will be able to harm each other afterwards for 30 minutes, unless one of them sends a duel request and the other accepts. Duels give renown at a higher rate but scale based on how many players are in the server. Duels and their results are also announced to the server like executions are. This is to prevent abusing the duel system to farm renown.

how is the system kickstarted if everyone is at 0 renown? Since there’s no renown being generated through pve the only way this system would function is if extra renown is created through pvp, but then you’ve just created an infinite source of renown players will abuse and the renown economy becomes extremely inflated

Maybe you’d be able to get renown through PvE until a cap, where any further renown would have to be gained through player kills, either by bounty hunting or random ganking. Also killing the same player over and over could also have diminishing returns, meaning good luck finding multiple people in your threshold to passively farm kills off of.

ok but then playing PvE will be boring, since it’ll be missing a major game feature

PvE players couldn’t care less about renown and would typically rather not have to deal with it and its consequences.

just turn renown into reputation and separate bounty, like in AA and WoM. make renown into player kills of the opposite reputation at a similar level to you (except villains who can kill either)

That’s allready the case iirc, hunting criminals/heros don’t give Renown over 1mil

i’m meh with the 1st part, though getting more renown if youre in an Elysium tournament sounds pretty cool! balancing renown in order to combat toxic pvp is pretty difficult, who knows what vetex or the balancing guys will do

global agora messages should really be in the game already, as you said, for big stuff like leaderboard assasinations and whatnot, cuz rn the agora is pretty boring to read after youve seen most of the messages

im also a fan of the little changes in #2, ships, castaways and other npcs recognizing you could make the funny fame/bounty number actually carry some weight. also you could expand on that duel system, i’d be a fan of it were it to be added

Would be cool, but not sure if this falls into the dynamic npcs rejected suggestions list.

drop the duel kick in to 2 kills
and increase the timer to 1 hour and you got yourself a deal

nah. i think renown is fine the way it is. its only bad because it gatekept deckhands, which is getting changed

second this, i literally ask random people to hunt me cause i dont want to spend like ~1k resetting lol ( not to mention id also have to go all the way to whitesummit )

funny thing.
even as a villain you can reset bounty in silverhold lol.

yes. while the ‘killing players to get renown’ seems like a bad idea, its actually pretty good once you think about it
